No idea about Security.
In terms of Availability its one of the best. Since Whatsapp doesn't have web interface, hence it sucks when I want to chat via PC. With Telegram I can chat on phone, can continue the chat on PC, talk with someone else on my Tab and then revert back to phone. This was the main reason why I tried Telegram in the first place.
About Messaging its not that good. Previously I was suffering the problem that messages were not being send instantly. So if I sent a message to my friend and if his phone were to be in locked position he would have only received the message when he would unlock it and/or open Telegram. Till today I face this issue occasionally.
In terms of Configuration and User Experience it's a ditto photostat of WhatsApp.

Yeah me too waiting for the Web based WhatsApp. But I never had any issue with WhatsApp whatsoever. Security wise I don't know but they are doing it for such a long time that if anything would have happened it would have been all over the Internet. Regarding telegram I used it for a few days but ended up going back to WhatsApp

I had this weird issue with whatsapp. I think my nsp read most of the chats and contacts in my whatsapp account. My mobile network service provider sent me messages based on my interactions with other people. For example if I fought with a friend on whatsapp - reliance(my nsp) would send me messages based on solving friendship issues and what not. If I interacted with a girl, it would send me messages on how to propose to a girl and other rubbish like that.
But once I stopped using whatsapp these weird messages from reliance also stopped coming. I think this is a serious security flaw with whatsapp (As in Reliance was reading each and every personal whatsapp messages and scrutinized my relationships without my permission)

That problem should have resolved as WhatsApp too uses end to end encryption now.
However the multiple interfaces of Telegram and its ability to send documents / files are clearly positives. Regarding message delivery issues, it could be because of some battery saving settings employed by your friend which restrict data connection when locked or while in background.

It's not if the app is good or not, if you take that into consideration I would say Telegram and even Hike is better than whatsapp, because of the smoothness and stability.
But,at the end of the app no matter how many IM apps you have installed, you will just use the one where all your friends are at(Most likely whatsapp) and all other apps just remain idle
