Hi guys,

I just wanted to ask you guys a simple question:

What technology, not invented yet, has the power to change India for the better?

Another way of thinking about this is: What is your dream for India, and if you had unlimited knowledge and resources, what would you invent to make that dream come true?

I just want honest opinions here, and everything from practical solutions that we could work on, to wacky out-of-this world ideas are welcome.

Just remember you have to suggest something that would make India and the lives we lead better... maybe ideas that will finally rid us of the "third world" tag...

I wish that we could do research in finding an unlimited supply of energy. This will solve a lot of issues. Secondly if could successfully find a way to make sea water either usable or drinkable it would be great :)

^ yeah, like developing more efficient and economical solar panels, so that atleast 50% of total power consumed is supplied from them. all the people would install solar panels like DTH dishes installed these days...

Interesting... what else?

I would want to find a way in which we can completely do away with paper money, perhaps we should have a one-mobile-per-indian policy, and make mobile payments the only way to conduct even everyday purchases. Thus making black money non-existent, and also reducing / eliminating corruption!

One-mobile-per-Indian is a good idea but if it is only being suggested for money transactions then why not use biometric technology. Using fingerprints and biometric gadgets one should be able to make payments/do transactions (a la Back to the Future, part3 I guess ;) )

There shouldn't be actual money in market? Almost every transaction should happen virtually?

With biometrics in mind... we could have something like US's Social Security Number -- basically a 12/16 digit unique identifier for each Indian -- just like UIDAI is trying to do, but mandatory.

I would really want to see much more efficient solar panels like someone said above....In India we have sufficient sunlight...It could easily solve the energy problem.
Also I want to see post office eliminated...Instead we can have cyber office.

Other then Tech I want to see a tablet which can provide nutrition equivalent to a meal....and cheap too:razz:

a voice translator and interpreter in every indian language would definitely bring the potential out of educated ignorant indians.i believe that english has been a huge obstacle in the modernizing or rationalizing the common man.so why not make our over educated society actually understand everything they study and invite scope for inventions in every field.

i also agree we need more electrical power than we generate now.domestic power generation technology might be the solution

Yeah!
Solar is the way to go!

Controlled fusion reactions would provide more than enough energy.
I wish to have the technology for fusion reactions.
I also wish for a miracle for peace in J&K.

Distribution of industry to various locations instead of one prime location/city (preferably IT which is easy to set up compared to others like factories, etc) .

Think of the city as Mumbai which has all sorts of industries at one place making mass inflow of population which is impossible to manage for the government (and huge problem of cost of living). If the industry was cleverly distributed in the state or the nearby developing cities (Australia is an example, they do it), the problem would not have been huge.
I live in Pune and every IT company is here, if government made some rules or guidelines to enforce employers to set up their offices at developing cities then it would aid those cities and prevent metro cities from facing ever growing issue of population concentration.

I know the suggestion is not related to some revolutionary technology, but this is what I had in mind when I saw the topic title.

Hmm... Like a tech equivalent of the babel fish (from Hitch Hikers) ? That illusive dream of "Indian Unity" could also come a little closer...

Incidentally Google is doing a lot of work in the area of language recognition and translation here in India.

As Gagan said the most important thing we need to find for the faster development of our nation is a source of unlimited power supply. Do you know because of this petroleum import only we are loosing lot of money. If we (India) can find an alternate for it, our government can save a lot of money and dependency over middle eastern countries.

Implementation of social security number (like in US) in India may be harmful for the freedom of citizen as long as the corruption and partiality exists in our government body(don't take it negative in reality our gov is not yet free from partiality and all).

ideas that will finally rid us of the "third world" tag...

I firmly believe that, what we need more than any invention/technology/gadget is the civic sense. Just the will to treat our motherland with a little more respect and care, would go a long way..

and on technology front..
with finger print scanners becoming so cheap these days.. if we add one to the ATM machines and other payment portals, we can get rid of plastic card fraud to a great extent. (or maybe get rid of plastic cards all together!!)

I wish the Indian society would reject all forms of the "famous Indian conservatism" and that "culture/tradition" cr.ap, which are easily the most detrimental things that happened to us, and nothing has hurt us as much.

Whether anyone agrees or not, a conservative culture has no scope of excelling in today's world. Western and most foreign cultures (the hugely successful ones) have accepted that we're biological creatures with longings and cravings which are natural. :) Our screwed up culture wants us to think otherwise.

All readers are very much aware of what longings/cravings you are pointing to..trust me it has nothing to do with development. But yes their education system is much better than ours but it also a fact that India produces no lesser brains than west.

trust me it has nothing to do with development.

Really? Ok then,

1. How do you explain the strong correlation between successful countries and their liberal (sexually and otherwise) societies?

---Not related to my original point, but.....

2. How do you explain that the most successful countries don't have parasitic parents living off their children and grandchildren all their lives in the name of love and togetherness (which is of course, a lie commonly resorted to by Indian parents)?

3. How do you explain that most successful countries' don't have a draconian-ly hierarchial family system where the "head-male-libidoEquipped-dad/granddad" will dictate the will of the house, rule over women, children, their lives and the timings when family members go to the bathroom (literally!)?

4. How do you explain that most successful countries believe in treating women with the "ladies first" principle? And in the majority strata of our lovely society, the wife will wait for the husband to eat first or else go hungry. No offence meant, but ask your mom, maybe she'll explain to you philosophically and critically why she makes the table for the family and not vice versa, why she'll wash the whole families dirty undergarments all her life while you and your pops will watch a cricket match. I suspect too many people use this "culture" thing as a mechanism to establish the dominance mindset that exists till date.

5. How do you explain that most successful countries don't have (and never had) the IIT/IIM/what-have-you madness which we have here? How do you explain that in those nations education is not a contest, but much more meaningful in the context of innovation and economy building rather than providing slave labor to other countries? Our IITs and premier instutions are built for the benefits and welfare of USA and the rest of the world, not for the measly and patheticly poor population that resides at home.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with you. Being an Indian I say this: Indian culture is wrong, just plain wrong and demeaning. Personal freedom is not believed in, & the way children are raised and treated is just disgusting. For Indian parents, their children are long term investments that should bear fruit when they land their first paychecks.

As for the original poster: sorry for deviating from the main topic, but I feel it leads to this. Inventions are a far off thing, there are more things fundamentally wrong here. To invent would require to have freedom and funding, both of which aren't available. Talent? Of course, without doubt.

Take two succeeding pre-teen Indian generations, and treat them they way American and European kids are treated throughout their teens. Don't tell them "x is good y is bad", guide them but don't decide for them, throw them out of the mom-dad niche by the time they are 22-23 and rid them of all cultural/moral/traditional responsibilities, and see where they end up. My point will be proven.

@Gagan: Please don't get me wrong, I don't want you to take my post personally: I thought your conclusion wasn't good enough because you didn't back it up with an argument. I hope you'll do now. Hoping to have a good discussion without any hard feelings.

first thing India needs : A law to stop the population increase so that it becomes less than half in future.

Next is building economically strong population base.

Not to forget prioritize use of solar energy..... its a shame that so much energy gets wasted. And solar energy can be used without solar panels too.

Hi guys,What technology, not invented yet, has the power to change India for the better?

Technology not even invented yet? Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that presently, even the technologies that are very real and developed aren't being used to their full extent if at all.

As for your question, I agree with you on the idea of abolishing the paper currency system altogether. In a country like India, where corruption thrives so freely, doing away with paper money would really help in India's ascension from a third world country (or so they say) to a developed nation.

Here's a little something I picked up from ratedrsuperstar's post. How about we have all the computer languages, operating systems and other technological goodies in local languages? The Koreans, the Japanese and the Chinese chose their own languages even for use in technology and the last time I checked, they were kicking some serious ass in the technology department. The PlayStation, Samsung Galaxy S, Xpera phones. Sound familiar? All that stuff comes from those countries. They use their phones, game consoles, computers and everything in their native languages. So, why do we have to stick with English?

Many of us are under the delusion that English symbolizes status or something of that sort. Newsflash: It doesn't! Half the Europe doesn't speak English!

I don't have any such ideas of my own, but I'll be sure to post when I come up with one.

No matter how hard we try Raaabo we indians are going to be behind the white race since the people in control of the world hate us so much for our culture and religion ;)

Some days, I think about how much potential this country has and what it could become. Then I find people like you. Alright, we'll work on improving the place we live in while you lick on some western butts.

first thing India needs : A law to stop the population increase so that it becomes less than half in future.

Stop population? Like literally stop it? Did you even think before posting? India needs young people to develop and they don't grow on trees.

@RChandan To some extent I agree with you but a country needs its culture too. I think these talks regarding the cultural backwardness of India should be taken to a new thread.

Outsource governance to European Union. Yes, am actually serious. As long as there are scams and there are things that can be achived only by throwing money, our country won't go anywhere. My friend recently told me an interesting statistic.

Top speep of a rail in China in mid 90's: 60mph
Now, they hold world record in rail speed.

Reason is strict governance. They take everything with pride.

Here goes the main problem. We are so jealous of USA. We always try to find a single fault of USA rather than our own. Why can't we just accept that U.S.A is a far more better country than us
and Education? Well our Education system sucks. All the student from A+ rated institutes tries to get a job in the Western countries, why? coz they are intelligent and know life can be far more comfortable there than here. So it basically doesn't matter that a 8th grade student of India has the IQ of a 12th grade of USA student when India don't even know how to keep their own students in the country..
and one more thing the mentality of Indian people especially the old aged ones are Pathetic. I some times get confused that are living in 2011 or stone age still? and also India and their crap Government need to learn how to respect every single Indians rather than eagerly trying to empty pocketing them.

May be my thinking is different from other, but let me start from a small topic...

Its a best way to get a Smart Card, which will carry all the information like Voter ID, Passport, PAN, Driving License. This will help everyone of us definitely.

I heard long time back, it was suppose to be implemented in india, with colabrations of TCS. But no updates till date, due to sluggish way of working.

Now move on to another topic...[This is a real incident which happened in 2009]

I asked my friend, whether he have given Vote or Not in the current year election.
He replied me, saying if the local MLA is not paying them, there's no point is giving vote to them...even others also supported him.

This guy has completed his M.Tech in Electronics.Comm & working for a MNC & his reply was so cheap which is not expected from a educated person & his dumb friend supporting him.

How can you make such a broad abstract statement? Our Government may be slow, inefficient or may make bad decisions. But that does not mean that our government is crap. The so-called hype of corruption is full of misconceptions. Very, very few subset of government officers are actually corrupt. We do have hardworking people at the ministry and everywhere else. Anna Hazare is doing his best to remove the small corrupt subset.

You should be happy that atleast we have democracy -> Better than the dictatorship of the British. We are recovering albeit at slow rate.

So in my opinion, do not make such abstract or general statements. You can of course point out to the subset/and/or people you know are corrupt. But not everyone is and not everyone wants to. There are a million people in india who want corrupt free nation. And democracy will help us in achieving that. Have patience.

I agree with you to a certain extent that we are unable to cope up with problems like poverty and education. It is just a matter of time. Hardly 50 years have passed by since we are independent. Compare the situation of India in 1960s and in 2010. It is certainly better.

And +1 -> The mentality of old age people is traditional and they think of technology as a waste of time.

There are more than one reason why India is still a 3rd rated country, all the reasons will take a full day typing, and I don't have time :p
The World is open. If you say India is a 3rd rated country, why are you living here then? Go to the US!
You would find every 9/10 citizens in US having relationship issues.

Coming on to Education, well the whole system - wherever you go - tests your memory rather than knowledge/concepts. So Ideally, none of the education systems are "better". If you want to compare the syllabus - India has some of the best. And remember all those great discoveries - Trigonometry, Geometry, Surgery, Algebra - all have their roots in India. Medicine, living, culture. Name it.

You can think of a million reasons when you are on criticizing something. It takes more effort to look into our own plate and appreciate its beauty.
I asked my friend, whether he have given Vote or Not in the current year election.

Increase in Education Quality and reduction of corruption which would lead to less Geniuses being exported to foreign countries. That may give us a shine of hope for the REAL development of this country. To what I've been observing these many years, India may have increased the development technically but the quality of this development still isn't worth it.

In ref to the question asked, i think many have it right. Green technology and a cheap technology to power our growth is the first on the list. Some technology which can be powered by nature (something available in abundance) like, air, water or solar power.

Other stuff that would help are eradicating illiteracy, compulsory education for the youths, removing all sorts of reservations and increasing opportunities for the deserving, trying to get rid of the corruption in public life.

The topic is too much overwhelming to speak about and at the same time Very Depressing One.
Just Dont want to think about it.Speak about it.

"For us indian to achieve something which First World States like US ,UK are already having for years is development" ----Raabo Mentioned Long time Back.

Thats the clear scenario of our country.

Wont be speaking about miserable and hopeless Politicians(read corrupt) of our country.

The Great Indian Dream...hmmmm...First we Indians need to have our dignity back which we have lost by pitying over our own condition and seeking warm comfort in Finding one way or other to dig at the names developed countries.

First earn your greatness then put your Great Indian Dream!People.

===============================================================================

Anna Hazare is doing his best to remove the small corrupt subset.

Sadly he is the only one standing for this movement.Of over 1billion people in the country a 60+ yr old made an advancement to do something against corruption. For last 60 years country has been asleep.Putting in the name of One man aint a proper soln bro.

You should be happy that atleast we have democracy -> Better than the dictatorship of the British. We are recovering albeit at slow rate.

History iS gone.
Talk about present and if possible compare India and Britain of 21st Century.

There are a million people in india who want corrupt free nation. And democracy will help us in achieving that. Have patience.

They just want it and thats the problem. They want it like anything. Not ready to do something. Its patience we have been holding to and still are from last century.
If waiting would have been a solution, 50+ years had been more than enough for something to happen !

And +1 -> The mentality of old age people is traditional and they think of technology as a waste of time.

Bull$###

The World is open. If you say India is a 3rd rated country, why are you living here then? Go to the US!
You would find every 9/10 citizens in US having relationship issues.

Thats all you have got to say to that.Go to US.Runing away is not solution. And if it had been possible for everyone...the half(or more) of indian population would have already migrated to us,uk..but sadly escaping is not possible.!!!

Name it.

A fixed rote syllabus for engineering and docs.
Thats all indian edu has got to offer.
In india education means physics,science,maths..intellect.....Let creativity and passion of students eat **** in hell!!!

The best and greatest minds of India generally immigrate to foreign nations for recognition and money.. Stats prove that almost 30% of the biggest companies interlectuals are Indians including (Intel engineers, Microsoft, NASA scientist and lot more)..

The dream should be to prevent this brain drain and retain the best and brightest in India.

There are many examples of such folks trying to do good for the nation by means of joining IPS, IAS, ISRO and many other institutions willing to contribute, but they get sidelined and due to the mass corruption and selfish agenda of govt officials and politicians.. and are forced to seek recognition elsewhere.

The Main problem being everyone educated in India have a Different scene scenario.

Example :

What will happen, if "The Right Hands & Left Hands of Politician knows, what is human rights & how to escape after a crime is being convicted ??"

Do you think, the Rich people will get maids & Servants after everyone is Knowledgious ?? Do you think, someone will come & pick up your Garbage from your Door after completing his graduations ?? or even Worst MBA.

Do you think someone will even dream to become a Bus Conductor or Ticket Collector or Bus Staff after being well educated ??

You got to see both the sides of the Coin.

There was a story in my Hindi literature book which describes this problem. In short, this is because we think that those who do brain work are superior to those who do labor work. And we can only get rid of this problem when we respect them equally and everyone partakes in both of these activities instead of just either of these.

i'm too a mechanical engg but instead of going for jobs and mba and other sh*t i have chose my family business..because i saw too many berojgars around me.....i belong to such place where if you give 7k a month people will die for you.....so i choose exploiting people.......

and India have a Different scene scenario after your scenario..

majburi ka nam mahatama ghandhi...

here in my state government providing "1 rs rice,2 rs dal"..and MNREGA ..."Rojgar Gurantee".....now you imagine...just imagine .....

a person go to work at monday.....got 170 for his day work now what he does...he buys all the necessary stuff for his family for one week...........no no he wont save the money...he goes for alcohol...which is very cheap for him....only 30 rs.....so dont know go to work for the next 2 days...and his family wont mind it because they got what they need............same scenario if he came to work at my fields...now i've to give him 250 rs /day + 30 rs for alcohol because if i dont he wont come to work....Labour prolem......so in a way they exploiting me ...

to solve this i turned to those "not eligible for 1 rs rice plan group"...most of them are educated...bba,bca,b.a.....they came to my fields in compulsion........i give them 300/day for less pain in head....

they have knowledge but i've money

and education matbal ye nahi ki science,chemistry,physics.......atleast logo ko paper padhna aana chahiya....they should know about RTI,rte, rights.what govenment providing them....this is only possible through education.....

......

Formal education in our country has become very expensive , far from the reach of a common man. Right from a kindergarten to colleges , its all about money.
Its difficult for someone to complete higher education from a good college in India , if he hails from Middle-Class , is in General category and is above average/good student.

In India, I want to dream something, that every river should be clear and clean and we should stop waste drainage in to rivers, and make the use of these drainage waste in to any renewable energy system, so that we can make energy from all the waste material from the cities, which makes our river polluted and dirty.
