According to this article, the phonographic disc on the Voyager 1 space craft, containing assorted images, videos and sounds from earth for aliens out there apparently is copyrighted. Which makes me wonder if the aliens do play that disc, are they in violation of copyright infringement?

I can see your deleted post. ;-)

On topic: Copyright infringement and all other laws are territory bound. Most laws don't apply outside earth. If someone's guilty, it's the people who put those phonographs in the voyager.

Hey laws made on earth would apply to "earthlings", so I guess the aliens are safe! :p :D

Edit: Dang! Krow beat me to it! :)

If they listen to it , since they are the intended audience its ok.

However if they ever try to copy, reproduce it then they have infringed on the copyrighted material.

Go figure it out...

On topic :

I was wondering that it'd be weird if their first contact with us is when we are suing them for copyright infringement. If they do copy it and bring those copies to earth.

Wow.. we would be meeting with Extra-terrestrial beings, which may arrive from maybe thousands of light years away.. and all we would care about is whether they infringed copyright!

Well, god help us all, in that case.
