Canonical today hoped to preempt all comers today with news of Ubuntu Mobile. Its first Linux variant aimed at handhelds, the software is tailored for the Mobile Internet Devices expected to launch in spring based on Intel's Silverthorne technology and is designed to recognize basic iPhone-like gestures such as swiping to scroll through menus and websites. A scrolling visual front end based on Flash or Clutter replaces the traditional Ubuntu desktop and is designed to be used solely with fingers, including an on-screen keyboard.

Dude, do you want to start another flame war here or should we remind you of the succesful Moto cell phones running linux??

Linux is scalable from the smallest device to the biggest one's regardless of architecture! This is one that no other OS can do!

^^you never heard me right. All I said was that the Ubuntu Mobile will be very user friendly like its desktop cousin, and extremely customisable, but it will have an ugly UI, and that will be until Infra_Red_Dude comes up with iPhone4Lin

u had ur UI reason i had my repository reason, the point that both of us dont want it to be as its desktop cousin is common, the reasons are different :)

u had ur reason i had mine :)

repository systrm rocks, IMO. You can get thousands of mobile apps at the click of a button.

and this will come only preinstalled in phones. So the manufacturer will take care of all the software/codecs/drivers. End users don't go and install OSes on their mobiles. So the actual OS will be quite raw, ready to be customised by the manufacturer.

Motorola Phones do not run Ubuntu mobile. He was talking about Ubuntu Mobile.

So is Windows Vista (Desktop), Windows Server 2008 (Server), Windows CE (Consumer Device) Windows for embeded devices, Windows Mobile (Mobile Phones). Whats your point of comparision here?

No windows for PPC architecture but linux can run on PPC

No windows for Cell architecture but linux can.

Hope you stop bragging and implant these 2 into your brain.

If there is demand for Windows on PPC (IBM's own server only architecture now which they don't license for consumers) or Cell Architecture (Sony's own CPU architecture for there PS3 Game console which they are not relesing for consumers to be used in normal desktop PC)...then Microsoft will sure release even Windows 7 for Toaster :D

Windows is released where there is market demand. Linux...well, anyone can come, code, compile,...run , leave.

Correctly pointed out :) There is no need for MS to release a PPC version of windows.

I'd like to buy a toaster with the Cell proc., so that I can watch HD movies on it till my toast it ready! :D

Windows is released where there is market demand.
Porting software across architectures esp. OS is a herculean task! Even MS will need a huge team and enormous amount for time for it. Its not as easy as saying Hey I need Windows to run on this, so MS just port it to this arch.!

Linux...well, anyone can come, code, compile,...run , leave.
True, thats why Linux is scalable; coz there is no such thing as a particular "team" and all the world's time is yours.

^^and we hate having to go, ask M$ to implement a feature, and pay 7k to get a new product with that feature in it. Its not worth it.

and the kernels for windows server, desktop, ce and mobile are not the one and the same. they are differnet. Hence its not truely cross platform.

why do you try to convert every single thread about something that has a connection with linux to a flame war despite knowing that you neither have any valid points to fight and that you are not fighting in the rignt place ?

Cell Architecture (Sony's own CPU architecture

Again, this is what happens when you think only windows, windows, windows!!

Cell architecture is not Sony's. It's owned by IBM!!! Get alive @gx!

Or you can use a free/ less costly 3rd party application.

Umm...why have one big kernel? Why not multiple small kernel as & where aplicable.

Although MS is changing this with MinWin.
