Unlike in Christianity, sex isn’t taboo in Hindu spirituality - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Asaram is being pilloried by everybody, from parliamentarians to journalists, for alleged sexual assault on a teenager and is in jail now. Some of the horrified public responses at his alleged act can also be attributed to the general notion that dissociates sex from spirituality. This notion considers everybody on the spiritual path as 'wedded' to celibacy. But is this perception correct?

A spiritual person, such orthodoxy goes, must not have a carnal side, a belief that stems from the sanyasi tradition where it is popularly believed that a seeker after God renounces all desires. This possibly explains why many Hindi newspapers and TV channels are aghast at the preacher's "fall from grace". In the English language media, the same horror is related: that men of cloth, like the Christian missionaries, must be celibate and breaking the vows of chastity would call for de-frocking of the erring priest.

In fact, the Boston Globe in the United States had run a series of reports on sex abuse in the Catholic church. Several such reports have appeared also in TOI. Since 2002, much of the US media has been critical of the approach of the bishops while dealing with sex abuse by priests. The net has a number of reports like this and this. This is because in Catholic church priests are bound by religion to be celibates. The instances of aggravated sexual transgressions by priests are worse as they involve under-age children, often of the same sex.

TOI Fail.
Asaram is not being hounded bcoz he had sex with someone,But because he RAPED(Or attemped to,IDK) a MINOR girl
Stop changing the topic TOI.

TOI is a joke for a newspaper. Its more of an entertainment newspaper like an entertainment magazine.

*cough* India TV *cough*

Lol. Trust TOI to try and find an angle that absolutely no one cares about. I don't think anyone's angry if Asaram has sex, heck he has a son doesn't he? So it's proven that he has sex. Plus TOI also paints all "Christians" as Catholic. Only Catholic priests have to be celibate, there are many more sects that allow the priests to get married, and some even have women priests. The author of that article is an idiot, pure and simple - asking the wrong questions, totally out of sync with public anger, and bad research. Besides, if found guilty, hang godmen, priests, regular citizens, politicians, etc., for raping minors, regardless of gender!

Who says TOI is a joke of a newspaper. It is one of the best media houses in this country which brings out TRUTH just like DC of Hyderabad.HINDU is primarily based in chennai. So RAPE should be dealt with same intensity as TERRORISM in India. What is the use of legal sytem when it cannot deliver what needs to be delivered in time. There should be public hanging so that every one can see and will never commit such offenses again. I also do not understand why offenders are brought from jail to court and vice versa in hoods covering their faces rather they should be paraded in public so that every one will know who he is and mock him until he dies of that guilt itself.

+1 to this.

How funny it is that people are going crazy these days in the name of politics , religion , caste , etc. Its getting crazier everyday instead of realising and accepting some very basic and simple facts that can promise lots of change.

It feels chaotic everyday isn't it?

The ToI & media will milk it till they get a new issue/breaking news. Media & credibility don't go together. Look at what Mr Rupert Murdoch did. But expect it to have a good amount of coverage for its the current theme - rape.

Raaabo has put forth a very good point in all Christians being assumed to be Catholic.

Coming to the parading & hanging of culprits, rapes still happen in countries with capital punishment for the offence & countries that do not have any law & order. Even if we were to introduce the capital punishment for rape in India, it wouldn't deter the offenders.

It's amusing how the ****in media have an expert view/opinion on everything. Right from school studies, law to running a country. (Times View)

Look at the idiots in the comments. Everyone is offtopic in every way.

The FB page of TOI is even worse. I unliked it just because of the sheer number of idiots who comment over there.

TOI is just a trollpaper
