hi,
I've got about 20k for a pc upgrade. I'm going to use my gtx275 and seasonic s12d 750 from my earlier pc, the rest i think........

(from the configs suggested)
Core i3 2100
Asus P8H61-M LE-B3 mobo
4gb ddr3 ram
Dvdrw drive
Dell 20"

I already have a hdd and keyboard/mouse and speakers.

Do you guys have any suggestions or changes?
What case do you recommend for less than 3k? I'd prefer one with the psu at the bottom as the seasonic is quite heavy.

The reason i chose the above mobo is because i wanted the 4x sata ports.

Thanks.

Re: upgrade fpr 20k

That rig looks great. If OP is willing to overshoot his budget slightly I would recommend AMD Phenom ii x4 955 BE @ 5.5k for the processor.

Re: upgrade fpr 20k

Thanks for the help.

I think I'll pass on the x4 635. i3 seems to be better in terms of performance in most benchmarks.

However what about i3 vs 955be? I'm mainly going to do gaming so I don't necessarily need a quad core.

Re: upgrade fpr 20k

i3 is going to be pwned by a 955 BE.
Although the i3 seems attractive in short term but mind you games are slowly becoming core happy (more cores=more performance)

Re: upgrade fpr 20k

Phenom II X4 955 BE @ 5.5k
Corsair Vengeance 4GB @ 2k
Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H @ 4k
BenQ G2222HDL LED @ 8.5k

Overshoots your budget by 2k, but worth it!

Re: upgrade fpr 20k

After some discussion and begging and pleading, I've managed to get my hands on a case and keyboard temporarily.

This means that can free up about 4k as I can also leave out the optical drive for later.

So, possible config....

Intel Core i5 2400 9300
Asus P8H61-M LE B3 3300
Corsair CMV4GX.. 4GB 2000
DELL IN2020M 6200
-----------------------------
Total 20800

According to my friend,RAM prices have dropped to about 1.6-1.7k and I might be able to squeeze in the benq22" if I can get a bit of a discount on the whole config.

What say?

We are quoting the lowest possible prices already, forget more than Rs. 50 discount.

I don't get the point, buying a scraped out motherboard, and a smaller monitor doesn't seem an even trade AT ALL.

My config makes so much more sense right now. Better monitor, still a quad

I'm mainly going to do gaming so I don't necessarily need a quad core.

what rubbish

eh?

the i3 outperforms the 955be in almost all gaming benchmarks I've seen.

The 955 beats it in almost anything else, but what do I have to do with rendering and video editing?

And another small correction,

I wasn't referring to the 22" you specified. My mistake.

My friend actually suggested the benq E2220HD which he says he can get for little less than 7k.

If available at that price, grab it. ;)

with what? A GTX580 or HD6970?

I'm sorry we are talking about what, NO GPU here.

Whoa boy!!! Cool down. I'm not jumping down your throat here.

I've referred to various forums on Anandtech, guru3d, ocerclock.net, etc... and various benchmarking sites.
In every single case, the phenom 2 was beaten by the i3 2100 in gaming tests. The configs were always the same with only the mobo and CPU changing.

If you believe otherwise than please feel free to post relevant links and I'll gladly look at them.

Secondly, now that I'm considering an i5, which beats the pants off a Phenom II, it isn't even under consideration now.

Thirdly, if you've ever been to lamington road, you must know that you can usually squeeze in a discount of 200-300 or more on the whole config if you're persuasive enough.

Fourthly, I don't see anything very tempting on the motherboard you're suggesting. The ASUS is more than enough for my needs thank you very much.

Finally, personally, I don't see much difference between 20" and 22" monitors. The extra viewing area is barely noticeable, ditto the resolution. Now if it was a 20" vs 24", it would be a different matter all together.

Your frank opinion here, what objection do you have to the above config, with i5 and benq 2220? Especially when it is coming at the same price as the config you suggested.

The OP hasn't mentioned a GPU, buying one, or gaming.

I'm talking specific situation wise.

We all know AMD's CPUs are no match for INTEL's in gaming arena.

If you are planning to get i5 2400, no point arguing here, just get it. It is far better than any AMD offerings in all the segments. But for motherboard, don't get the H61 mobos. They are very entry level solution and won't give you enough bandwitdh for future upgrades. It lacks all the major features like USB 3.0, SATA 3, only 2 ram slots etc.
So try to get at least Intel DH67VR-B3 @ 4.5K. It has 4 ram slots with 32 GB support, 2 SATA 3 6 Gbps and 2 USB 3.0 ports and very good for a basic gaming rig.

hmmm. The thing is, once i buy this rig, i'm not going to be upgrading for a couple of years at least.

I've never needed more than 2 ram slots but i need 4 sata slots. I have 3 hdds supporting 2.5tb of storage and dvd drives are usually sata nowadays. Also, my drives are all sata 2 so i'm not going to need sata 3.

future proofing-wise my pc does fall short, but i think i can manage without the extra usb3 and sata 3 bandwidth, esp as i was perfectly satisfied with my earlier pc.

@comp...- "The OP hasn't mentioned a GPU, buying one, or gaming."

What exactly do you mean? If you mean buying a GPU, I've already got a gtx275 and PSU.

What specific situation?

Anyway, thanks a lot for all your help guys. I'll be going to Lamington in a couple of days and getting some quotations.

I'll check out the 67 series mobos and if I can get one with 4xsata slots in a decent price I'll go for it.

I'll post the final config with actual prices before purchase for one final inspection.

Point is you will be already populating all the 4 SATA ports of the H61 mobo, so in future you simply can't add another internal disk or blue ray drive. And if you say you will manage with an external drive, get the USB 3.0 support, it will make a hell lot of difference.

Bottom line is never skimp on the motherboard. A good, feature-rich mobo can really keep you away from upgrades for a long time to come.

^^ Exactly. Now a days price of SATA 3 6 Gbps ready Internal drives and USB 3.0 ready external drives are reducing and they are gonna be mainstream within 1 year. So if you won't concentrate on mobo now, ultimately in future yow will end up to pay more money to get older and slower components where faster and newer components are available in lower price and you have mentioned that you are not planning to upgrade sooner after this upgrade. SO better 1K more to get a H67 based mobo instead of H61.

Whereas I still have reservations about SATA III HDDs, they are more important for SSDs, USB 3.0 is a is a killer. No way I'm gonna miss it in a new mobo.

I've never actually used a usb device or hdd which has ever reached the peak speeds of sata 2 or usb 2. So what exactly is the point of sata 3 and usb 3?

My current pc, as mentioned in the signature is perfectly capable of running everything i throw at it, including crysis 2, dirt 3, etc.

To put it another way, i'm not a power user or something. I play games, i mess around with my pc, that is it.

Unless usb 3 is going to help my gaming in some way, i'm not going to need it.

Finally bought the PC

intel i5 + MSI H67 MA-E35= Rs14100

Samsung B2030 = Rs 5550 (Dell 2020 didn't have a DVI input)

I also borrowed case and RAM and keyboard from my friend, remaining rig is...

Seasonic S12D 750
nVidia GTX 275
Ram- G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL9D (4gbx2=8gb)
2x1tb Seagate 7200.12
1x500gb Seagate 7200

Note:- The MSI mobo was just what I wanted. 4xSATAII slots and 2xSATAIII slots, at the cost of 2 ram slots of course.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed.
