When you send .apk files you are basically sending the app in its executable form and installation form. (Just like .exe in windows). It doesn't include with it any data or messages.
Use this app to transfer anything to other Android. It uses Wifi tethering so its incredibly fast and easy. *play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lenovo.anyshare.gps

With Wi-Fi tethering, Bluetooth is of no use right? Will it be abandoned entirely?

Last thing I saw was that Infrared was still being used for features such as "Remote control" in LG phones. So I don't think Bluetooth is going anywhere. It have many advantages. Like wireless keyboard.
