I want to buy a 500 Gb hard disk with usb power. It should be USB 2.0 and 3.0 compatible. I have two brands in my mind Seagate and Western Digital. But i dont know which model to buy. It should be easy to carry and also powered with USB.

Both Seagate Freeagent GoFlex & WD My Passport are USB3.0 compatible, compact (2.5") & powered thru USB, i.e. doesn't external power cord. I haven't used WD, but satisfied with Goflex.

Avoid WD my passport as I've heard many complain of the drive being slow compared to other USB3 drives.

Mate go for newly launched Seagate Backup plus portable hdd. Its with inbuild automatic backup software where you can backup directly from facebook or twitter. And also its the fastest hdd in terms of write/read speed.

Not at all. I got 100-80MB/s write speeds in my WD elements.

As I've said, I haven't first hand experience with WD. However, following link might help you as far as USB3.0 speed is concerned.

Even I am looking at a similar drive albeit a 1TB version. This is the one I have singled out > (2 links for WD My passport)

Portable Drives India, Western Digital Portable Price, Buy Western Digital 1 TB MY PASSPORT Online - Infibeam.com
WD WD My Passport USB 3.0 1 TB External Hard Disk 1 TB External Hard Disk | External Hard Drive | Flipkart.com

I this a good portable HDD or are there better ones at the price? How is WD service?

^^ Buying from ebay would be a better option from where you can get this model @~4.8K
Why buying from flipkart and wasting your hard-earned money?
