After thinking for a while I concluded that s4 is better because-
HTC one won't be less than 45k and xperia Z is out of question when a more powerful device exists.
HTC one only if you need a awesome looking device
S4 is you don't care about it's looks (not too bad though)
Choice is yours.
My vote goes to s4

S4 will trump all..
Apart from the inside hardware, it is much better in terms of user interface (HTC One will come second)

I am not suggesting which one to buy, as that's upto you. So I'll just point out a few things about the Xperia Z and why someone should get it over the other two

* Superior Design, Build & Durability

* Water & Dust Resistance, for people with an outdoor lifestyle

* Faster Updates and least intrusive Android skin of all 3. Higher Quality software

* More RAM compared to HTC One, 1.8GB vs 1.5GB

And the most important one ( Not for all) XDA developer support. Let me not say anything but just quote Entropy512, who needs no introduction. Any GS2/3 owner will be well aware of him. He is one of the TOP and most respected developers for Galaxy line of devices. Here's what he says about Sony Xperia T/Z - (he is now developing for XZ)

I've had an Xperia T since late December - it's a great device to work with, although in some aspects it (just like a Nexus) has an aspect of difficulty to it - the original firmware is of such high quality that you've got to be REALLY careful not to accidentally cause a regression.

Yes CM10.1 on the T has had some issues lately, but mostly that's due to failed experiments... Rebasing the kernel onto the Mako kernel proved to not be workable in the long run and switching back is taking longer than hoped. None of that is Sony's fault though, so even though things seem like a behind-schedule mess, the critical difference is: The more I worked with Samsungs the less hope I felt that I'd ever be able to reach completion. With the Sony, it's different - yeah there are some challenging roadblocks, but never such a mountain of broken **** you lose hope. See CM10 on the T - I think that's incredibly well polished at this point.

On Z specifically:

Still on just rooted stock... I'll probably switch to CM this weekend, more out of "I should be doing more work on this device than using it to kick ass at Ingress" than out of any dislike for the stock firmware... Stock on this device is NICE.

Here's what he said about Galaxy S4's OCTA CPU vs Z

It's sad how many sheep are falling for Samsung's misleading "Octa" marketing which (falsely) implies that the device has 8 cores of equal capability.

IT DOES NOT.

It is a quad core device, with four additional low-power cores. More proper marketing would be 4+4 (kind of like Nvidia's 4+1 marketing).

There's also no benefit to having four low-power cores... In any situation where you'd drop to the lowpower cores, you'll also be hotplugging out all of the extra cores. A single low-power core will provide nearly all of the power reduction benefits of a full set of low-power cores. Yes, it'll be easier to handle migration in software - but it's throwing a pile of hardware resources (hardware cost) at a software problem to make up for Samsung's utterly ****ty track record with regards to software integration and quality control. Heck, look at ICS on the I9100 - they couldn't even get basic cpufreq policy limit implementation right with that release!

Samsung's architecture doesn't handle asymmetric core loading well at all. If you have one core maxed out, and want to run some light tasks on a second core - guess what, you have to light up that second core and run it at full tilt. Samsung has a whitepaper that claims this is a good thing, but if you look at their architecture closely (check the cpuidle driver in arch/arm/mach-exynos of their kernels...) you'll notice a nasty flaw - All of the deeper cpuidle states are disabled if more than one core is active. This means that the second core is consuming almost as much power as if it were running at 100% load even if it might only be running at 10% load. Snapdragon can actually reduce the clock/voltage of additional cores that are active but lightly loaded.

Of course, the most important thing is software integration - absolutely awesome hardware means nothing if the software supporting it is ****. Look at the Galaxy Nexus - Thanks to Google and TI doing a great job of integrating the "Project Butter" capabilities of Jellybean, the Galaxy Nexus delivers smoother UI performance with a dual 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 than the GS3 can with quad 1.4 GHz A9s...

That is what you will get with the Galaxy S4 - Awesome hardware paired with utterly crap software, leading to an overall crap experience. With the Xperia Z, you'll get great hardware paired with great software - for an overall great experience.

On HTC and S4

As to HTCs - they're a ***** to work with and HTC is even worse than Samsung at GPL compliance. HTC is also more zealous than any other manufacturer about sending lawyers after people. (Technically the latest round was DxO - but is it a coincidence it primarily affected HTC devices? Probably not.)

And Galaxy S4 - should've been called the Galaxy S3s - *yawn*

Z is awesome.

P.S. The above are the words of a highly respected ELITE XDA developer, not mine !. So if any Samsung fanboy's ego is hurt please go and argue with Entropy512 on XDA and not me. Thanks !! :)

Now coming to the screen of the Xperia Z. The first batch of Xperia Z used panel lottery system like Samsung TVs. 80% have Sharp panels, while the rest have JDC 1 and JDC 2 panel. ALL demo units have the worst quality - JDC 2 panel. So what you see in demo units is not what you'd probably get.

Let me summarize the three screens quick

1. Sharp - 1000:1 + Contrast Ratio, on par with the best screens on the market.

2. JDC 2 - 700:1 Contrast Ratio, This is what GSMArena got. It's the middle quality panel with worse blacks than Xperia S

3. JDC 1 - 450:1 Contrast Ratio. This is the worst panel of all and is found in ALL demo units and some retail units in Europe. I really have no words about this panel. It's a joke. You are 100% likely to see this panel in Demo Z at Croma and other outlets. EXtremely weak blacks and washed out colors with poorer viewing angles than even S/SL

Most of Asia has got the Sharp panel which is as good as Butterfly/One/One X/Xperia TX/Lumia 920 screens. There is very little chance you will NOT get this panel but to be sure

Buy a Z manufactured AFTER February 2013. Only the early batch uses panel lottery. February onwards 100% Sharp panels only are used. You can checkout the ZL screen to get an idea about the Sharp panel on Z. All ZL have Sharp panels.

So best thing to do is buy a fresh stock Z next month, you'll get the high quality Sharp panel.

Also screen calibration app will be provided by Sony in 4.2.2 update coming in 2 weeks. :)

In short, Z screen is NOT inferior to Butterfly/One or any other phone but the fact that ALL demo/review units feature poor quality JDC panels. Most Retail Z in India have Sharp panels which has good black levels and high contrast along with accurate colors. I've seen one myself so I do know what I'm talking about.

This was very interesting and informative.

Newer Sony phones are better integrated with Android than other companies which want to pile on a useless list of "features" which no one would use...

Entropy512 is not yet working on Xperia Z ROMs yet because he does not have that phone yet. He is still an elite Samsung Dev.

*i.imgur.com/pXV0qzT.jpg

Hope Sony supports developers with kernel source in time. Pure AOSP is the best Android experience you can get... Sony's UI is no good... Need, want pure Android... not just Nova launcher... but pure Android... or atleast CyanogenMod...

Still on just rooted stock... I'll probably switch to CM this weekend, more out of "I should be doing more work on this device than using it to kick ass at Ingress" than out of any dislike for the stock firmware... Stock on this device is NICE.

At this point IMO people looking for dev support should buy none of the above mentioned.. One and S4 are clearly out (from what I infer from randomuser111's comments in the other thread), and XZ has the weakest processor of the three and may be outdated by the end of the year..

The next Nexus is the answer..

If rumours are to be believed the next Nexus (built by LG) will have the following specs..

*5.2-inch (1920 x 1080) OLED display
*2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor
*3GB of RAM
*3300 mAh battery
*2.1 megapixel front-facing camera with 1080p recording at 30fps and a 16 megapixel rear-facing camera with 4k recording at 30fps or 1080p recording at 60fps

Xperia Z. When spending so much, looks too matter. And S4 but slightly more powerful than Xperia Z does not mean Z can't handle all android apps. Xperia Z will run all apps butter smooth.

And is S4 waterproof ?
randomuser111
Mar 17, 2013 at 9:28 AM
Outdated Processor ? Really ?

10% worse performance makes it outdated ?

In GLBenchmark HTc One scores just 4fps more than XZ. That makes XZ outdated ?

The performance gap between One X and GS3 was greater than the performance gap between Htc One/GS4 and XZ, yet people didn't say " Oh One X is using such an outdated CPU".

Even though XZ may be 10% slower it's still butter smooth .Look at S4 videos on GSMArena, it's the laggiest of the lot between HTC One/XZ and S4. Dialler app still takes 2 seconds to open just like S3 due to the heavy touchwiz skin.

So benchmark performance doesn't necessarily mean smoother real world usage, especially when difference is minimal.

I'm not denying the fact that XZ is the least powerful of the lot, but some people are exaggerating the difference quite a lot.

Let's look at some GL Benchmark scores of pre release Xperia Z vs HTC One

GLBenchmark 2.5 Egypt HD C24Z16 - Offscreen (1080p):

XZ - 30.4 fps
One - 34.1 fps

One - 61.1 fps

GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Classic - Offscreen (1080p):

Fill rate - Onscreen:

Design wise One > XZ (personal opinion)

And random, why are you quoting GLBenchmark for CPU performance. It is a GPU benchmark. Both XZ and One have Adreno 320. Still One performs better

Talking about lags, Note 2 doesn't lag. Those demo S4 units were not running final software version

Talking about contrast ratio, GSMA says the contrast ratio on Butterfly is 1100-1200. HTC One will have similar if not better.
S4 AMOLED will still have deep blacks. And Samsung has provided a simple setting to change colors to a more neutral tone. And Sony also showed their 4K AMOLED TVs at CES which according to Sony is the best screen. So Sony also believes AMOLED > LCD.

People dont use spen or multi-window on note?? If you are talking about people who are not power users, they will not use the screen calibration app too or care for dev support

Talking about updates, have a look a 2012 flagships like SGS3, One X and Xperia S and their update status. Sony skin is minimal but they are very slow to update

Regarding Entropay's comment, SGS4 has 8 cores and not 4 cores, hence octacore. Cores are never indicative of performance. 4x A7 cores can handle light apps hence there will be no need for A15 core most of the time. But A15 is there to satisfy the power hungry apps. Again quad A7 will have better battery life than S4 pro or Snapdragon 600 so Samsung counters the benefit of Snapdragon's asynchronous SMP architecture

No one mentioned about the fact that SGS4 has a 2600mAh battery?
randomuser111
Mar 17, 2013 at 10:50 AM
^

Both S4 pro and S600 have same GPU yes, but S600 320 is clocked higher.

Also if you read my post, 2013 there is a complete changeover wrt update scene for Sony devices. You shall see that in the next few months.

And as for color tone, SAMOLED does produce too oversaturated colors, S4 is even more saturated than S3. So you can imagine how "great" the screen will be. So in my books, and anyone else's who actually cares about image quality the S4 screen is simply the worst of the bunch. Not too mention it's also extremely DIM

Comparing a 45000$ TV to a 5 inch phone makes no sense, does it ? You do realize you can't compare a TV screen to a phone screen. A phone doesn't have any video processing whatsoever. It's just the panel and software calibration in a phone.

As for battery, it's only 200mAh more than XZ. LG Optimus G pro has 3100mAh battery and yet managed only 2 hours more than XZ in GSMArena battery stamina test. So, at best the GS4 will match LG Optimus G pro. Nothing more

Anyways you want CPU performance numbers?

Here goes

Samsung Galaxy S4 gets the early benchmark treatment, first scores are average

It's at par or worse than XZ running beta software. Final software will improve scores no doubt but they would still only match HTC One or be a lil behind.

And btw, Xperia Z beta scores leaked way back in December last year and it still scored 21k in Antutu and 60fps @nenamark 2, same as retail.
marvelousprashant
Mar 17, 2013 at 11:13 AM
And GSMArena guys also said
Again, however, we expect the score to improve drastically by the time the Galaxy S4 hits the shelves, particularly when you consider how well the Galaxy Note II does.
randomuser111
Mar 17, 2013 at 11:18 AM
^

When did I say that it won't improve ?

It will, but still won't be faster than One. Will match it at best.

So at best 15% faster than XZ in one or two benchmarks. A custom ROM/ kernel will narrow the gap down significantly. So the performance gains are only marginal at best and can only been seen in benchmarks, not real life.

I'll ask a simple question

- What can GS4 do that XZ can't ? Performance wise

And again, no Open GL ES 3.0 support on the GS4 which Adreno 320, Tegra 4, Power VR Series 6, Mali T6xx etc do support.

S Pen not good in real life! Well, I honestly purchased the N2 for it actually, it makes life easier, a lot. I don't have to scratch for the pen anymore, anywhere I'm carrying the N2 I don't have to worry about taking notes anymore. I'm not even going there where it can do some other important stuffs as well, like acting as a mice in the stock browser, air view in email and SMS and all.
Multi Window- Well I don't know. I don't use it, because I don't need to use it. But that doesn't mean it's an ineffective feature or something.
Take my N2 for a month, then comment back :|
PS: Sorry, I didn't notice your avatar! You must be a Sony fan. Hmm....in that case.....leave it!
I also love Sony, I'll never buy a T.V.or a walkman which isn't Sony, but I'm NOT fanboy!

Potential Samsung S4 owners might wanna read these two threads from Galaxy S4 XDA forum

Difficult to develop for GS4? - xda-developers

codeworkx will no longer make CM for the S4. - xda-developers

Short Summary -

No Elite developer will be supporting CyanogenMod development for Galaxy S4. The guys who brought CM10 (not fully stable due to Samsung's faults) to S2/S3/N2 have decided not to buy any Exynos based Samsung device in future.

Codeworkxx/Gokhanmoral/Entropy512 who were the top Galaxy developers have now chosen to develop for Sony Xperia Z instead due to Sony & Qualcomm's open arms approach to developers.

Of course for those that LOVE touchwiz need not worry, but for those who want CM should look elsewhere OR get the Snapdragon S600 based models from USA

R.I.P Samsung :)

From my point of view only ^^ :D

Not having cm is not the end of world!and just for the record This also doesn't mean that exynos version won't have cm - the device is bound to be popular and there will be many new devs (i admit that they won't be as experienced as entropy and all) and like almost most other android devices out there - unofficial ports are bound to come. There is no point in blaming an OEM for not releasing their pripeitory sources.
Z is a great device and has many a things like display /design/skin/ruggedness to its favour against s4 (and so does s4) - but the claim - "get z as you can flash cyanogenmod" seems childish (- nobody here said to get z to flash cm, was, just saying - no offense)
But I really never liked the idea of paying premium for a device and then going through all the hassles like unlocking boot loaders, flashing recoveries installing roms, tweaking them etc

There is(lil bit). They all took sources from Google! the OS(Doesn't matter though) but still, For example, see Sony! sources and all released before even Xperia Z came in markets!
It creates difference (for me it does, don't know about others )

If you actually read my posts, it's not all about CM but also software quality and user experience.

Samsung stock ROMs are far from perfect. They have a lot of bugs and not to mention Samsung has had some serious issues in the past like Exynos security exploit, eMMC bug, S3 sudden death and a few others I can't remember now.

Entropy512 explains this better :

"Yeah. I love the Z's display.

It's slightly behind the GS4 in terms of CPU (1.5 GHz quad Krait instead of 1.9) - but that really only matters on benchmark epeen. The raw hardware performance advantage will be thrown away by Samsung's bloat and atrocious software incompetence. Samsung Touchwizz is revolting and bloated, constantly assaulting you to sign up for a Samsung account until you give in or nuke the bloat. Sony's stock firmware, on the other hand, is so clean and well done that the ONLY thing I've done to my device after rooting so far has been to freeze the charge reminder in TiBu.

Mate I've explicitly mentioned that nobody here said that nobody HERE said to buy Z for cm so no hard feelings.
And yeah I've read all that and having tried my hands at kernel development too of gts5360(freq tables are so messed that apps cannot even access cpu states) - i do know very well that Sammy sucks at softwares.

One question.
Why is the LG optimus G Pro not being considered here? It beats the HTC one in most benchmarks, it will definitely be more affordable than the other manufacturers and it also has really good software features. I reckon its atleast worthy to be discussed amongst the other flagships. IMO if priced reasonably lower than other flagships it would be "the better deal."

Phablets are phones first... if someone starts a thread to suggest a new phone, we can suggest note 2, grand or micromax canvas hd too..but obviously not galaxy tab 2 with sim support since that is a tablet.

With a 5 inch screen the Galaxy S4 is also by definition a phablet

This should clear some doubts

S3 launched at 43k, available same day in shops for 39k. Same price for first few weeks then retailed at 35-36k for the next few months.

With the same logic S4 should be available same day for 40.5k and retail for 37.5-38k for the next few months.

By the Xperia Z will be available @ 33-34k and ZL @ 30-31k

A whopping 8k over Xperia ZL. :)

SGS4

in that order. Samsung should really hire some people to design the phone. Even the elongated iPhone 5 looks better than the SGS4, especially considering it is just a stretched out iPhone 4.

I think the only phones worth buying now are the HTC One, Nexus 4 and the Xperia SP (the Z was too big for my taste)

IIRC, Xperia Z was priced at 59,999.00 at e-bay on pre-order. So its normal guys, same with all the phones.

BTW, I am more interested in th Samsung's Octa architecture. We all know that the A15's are a beast. But it was also said that the amount of heat it generates, it is not feasible to use it inside a phone.
Now that Samsung is using it in a mobile, it will be interesting to see the amount of heat it generates while gaming and the battery back up.

Also, switching of processors (A15 to A7) to be implemented properly, else it will create issues while running cpu intensive tasks.

While we are speculating about which flagship is better, we need to wait for these answers.

For now, Xperia Z wins, simple as that :)

@random, the mobile phone technology is changing so fast. that you will be fooling yourself if you dont believe that the xperia z, the gs4, htc one are outdated.

yes the gs4 is outdated before the launch ( cry samsung fanboys )

looking at the current trends, the next nexus device / motorola phone x will pwn these phones like small babies.

The point is that this is a marathon, not a sprint... if the xperia Z gains more popularity and acceptance by devs, its bound to sell. as simple as that.

secondly, i dont think that apart from multiwindow reason .... anyone would like to carry a mini-notebook computer in their hand for talking.

sony has captured the samsung formula of the galaxy with the xperia... its not that revolutionary.. but at the same time, its more affordable and it has more dev options not to mention sony pushing devs

apart from that, even with the revolutionary technology the samsung phones come with, there is hardly anything the devs can exploit

like if the gs4 pauses if you turn your head the other way when you watch a video, you cant make the phone put the screen on standby? and then on again when you look at it.

^^I did and the screen is not very impressive.
Moreover the camera SW is sluggish (at least in ZL,but liked the physical button)
and the hyped Bravia engine or whatever, can mess up colours at times(not frequent though)
But the form factor of ZL is fantastic and is a very good buy at 30k,not sure about Z.
Sony needs to improve their panels asap and fine tune the SW

It has to be 4.5 inches 'coz they have to fit another row of apps there..
It can't be any wider else that would conflict their 'thumb commercial' for iPhone 5.. Enjoy the 20:9 wider aspect ratio on the next iPhone.

I suggest anyone who is looking to purchase these expensive phone should go to demo shops. Take complete demo of both HTC One & Samsung Galaxy S4 and get the phone of his or her wish. Because both of these phones are ultimate phones in the world.
Fast Android updates and CPU performance wise no one can beat Samsung's octa core SoC that scored above 28k in antutu.
Build quality, audio, display and low light camera performance is much better in HTC One.

Best looking out of three is HTC One...and also Boom Speakers is awesome along with blinkfeed.

but SGS4 beats One and Z in performance & reviews...

Samsung Galaxy S4 have a feature which pauses the video if you look away.

Source say that now S5 will have a hand which comes out and slap you if you look away while watch 18+ videos.
corrected

Most of the 'smart' features are gimmicks. There will be no difference between everyday performance between any of the three devices. Xperia z has subpar screen and camera,
htc one has subpar camera and s4 has poor design. In the end all three of them are great devices and the choice depends on personal taste.

All I wanted to say is, if Apple increases the screen size of iPhone in the next iteration, even 0.1", it would be a certain FAIL..
It would mean lack of innovation on their part..
While users are swapping their iPhones for large screen counterparts, grandma Tim Cook has commented that no one else apart from Apple have perfected screens and large screens with poor display quality by all other companies are "trade offs"..

If I have 40k right now. I would clearly go for HTC One.
For that much money one should get something premium in the hands. It's a phone that can seriously compete iPhone class users.
For the budget of 30-35k Xperia ZL/Z would be the perfect choice.
For 25-30k Imported Google Nexus 4 16GB from ebay.
For about 25-26k HTC One X 16GB is the perfect choice after price drop.
For under 25k Xperia SP.

According to me a perfect phone for an average human hand should be of under 130mm X 65mm with about 4.5-4.7" 1080p display. Thickness should be not less than 7mm and weight should be around 120g. Curves and edges and body like HTC One X.

Xperia Z is kicked out, S4 vs. One now!

After checking out s4's Build quality
I don't think it can feel PREMIUM, a 40k Device.
First impression is last impression

Thats exactly my point.. People are over protective about their phones esp. if they have paid 40k+ for it.. They will for sure buy a case for it, defeating the purpose of making the phone using aluminium/glass.. And these kind of phones are more vulnerable to damage than "cheap" polycarbonate counterparts. Metal can easily be dented, scratched; while glass can shatter, more so if it's exposed to repeated cycles of heating and cooling..

If anything happens to plastic phones just replace that part, as simple as that..

IMHO, people should stop calling plastic cheap and worthless..

P.S: I'm saying this 'coz my friend who owns a nexus 4(w/o a case) accidentally dropped it from a height of around half a metre.. Now the a small patch of touch panel is not working.. LG service centre are asking 6k to replace the screen entirely.. Now he has decided to import the screen module from US for 4k and get it done locally..

So IMO: Plastic = Glass or Aluminium..

Well the screen of galaxy s phones are also made with gorilla glasses. In case of dropping the screen can crack too. No matter what phone you own, you have to keep it properly. The people who drop things should avoid glass phones for sure.
