What does his movie collection have to do with shutting down?

Also, tho no harm in defragging, its unlikely to affect the shut down process.

Well my friends loves saving lot's of Movie DVD's on their hard drive using Alcohol (Make Images) on the same partition in which windows reside like desktop/My Documents

Than starts complaining that their boot speed has become slow or shut down speed has become slow.

Just after deletion these image files their speed is normal again. It's my experience. Correct me if I am wrong

I'd try shifting those files somewhere else... say mebbe a folder on the root drive.

Check Whether your RAM is properly placed and is not faulty

Check if XP is trying to clear paging file at shutdown. If that value in the registry is 1 then change it to 0 and see if it makes a difference.
