Microsoft's controversial anti-piracy application, Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), is to be upgraded next week... (to better the detection)...

The updates to WGA will incorporate user feedback, according to Microsoft, and it aims to make more information available about how the program works to those who download it, presumably to calm any privacy fears.

Though the update is officially optional, if you have Automatic Updates installed on your PC, the new WGA tool will be downloaded without your knowlegde.

I have Genuine OEM but knowing Microsoft their updates have the possibility of breaking my system. The last security update corrupted my internal bluetooth module and needed me a whole restore process to get it back to work.

Same thing happened to my graphics card. It said that my graphics card need a driver. So i thought installing that will make my care a happy one. After installing. The graphics card was acting very strange. Desktop restored to 16bit colour has there was no 32 bit colour.

So i had to remove all the graphics card driver and start from beginning. Iam no longer need to install any patch or other crap. What is the point of installing a security patch. I do not fear hackers getting into my sys. They would not find anything useful of my sys. Security updates are good for paranoid people.

Same here. After the Bluetooth incident I totally avoid Windows Updates. I never encountered virus except once by accident and once deliberately but that was during my Windows 98 and Me days. A good free antivirus like AVG updated regularly (automatic), a working spyware (Spybot SD) and firewall (Comodo) do all for me. I don't visit porn or warez sites so chances of getting malware or getting hacked it slim. Plus my wireless router is a natural firewall. Makes me feel so secure. :D

well you can make your copy of windows original by using *student*. . i wont say any further hint ;-). it will work forever cause MS cant disable that , as its given for educational institutions for testing xp pro with all functions :). its WGA proof ;-). i am running for a year now with all WGA and stuff and nothing beats it :). and it will never get beaten .

Heres the new Genuine Advantage tool and all the pirates be aware of it-
There is a new WGA tool published on Microsoft/Windows Update:

Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) Download size: 1.2 MB , less than 1 minute
The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be a non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows. Details...

Afterwords it comes with a wizard, you need to accept an EULA, then it comes with the the finish button and a option to show you the benefit of genuine software, with a link to:

Dutch version has a more funny approach of anti-piracy:

*bink.nu/photos/news_article_images/images/17037/original.aspx

It says: "Show me some advantages of using illegal software when I click finish"

I m using genuine windows, so no worries on that front, however, I do not use automatic updates, I make it a oint to visit microsoft.com, check out the list of updates and only install those that I find are required after reading what they aree supposed to do.. This way, I dont land up having stuff installed on my Comp without my knowledge. Also, visiting the MS website lets me dl uploads for office as well at one convenient go.

You know what Microsoft will say?. They will say this we are extremely sorry for what happened. We made some translation error and we regret from inconvience. That is all ms is good for.

Windows adds 'maybe pirate' category...

Until recently, Microsoft's antipiracy technology was pretty decisive: either your copy of Windows was genuine or it wasn't.
*i.n.com.com/i/ne/p/2007/Windows-genuine_550x413.jpg
With a software update this week, however, Microsoft has added a new "Yellow state" for times when it just can't tell whether a copy is legitimate

I still fail to understand the utility of WGA, all that it promotes is a minor hassle for genuine users and a slightly less minor hassle for pirated users, considering that WGA cracks keep coming out within a day or two of the WGA update. The only thing that is happening is that Microsoft is wasting valuable programmer time.

Exactly. MS lot of time on their hands. They could not find which software they want to copy. They are waiting for other company ideas.
