OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version are meant to be sold by System Manufacturers. (like DELL/HP/etc).

They Activate and Work only on one PC (i.e. if you upgrade your mobo, you need to buy a new copy)

The Package is not meant to be sold separately, But it IS available. It just contains a CD, CD-KEY (COA Sticker) and a mini-manual (which usually advises you to contact your OEM for everything)

The Retail Version comes in a Box, It can be installed on 2 Hardware Upgrades (i.e. 1 Current PC + 2 New PCs you buy over time)

Laptops obviously come with OEM Version, You cannot activate it on another PC.. It is Locked to your current hardware.

You can call Microsoft Customer Care, Lie to them and get it activate over Phone , But thats Illegal.

ok i haven tried linux and know only few things about liinux..

first the commands being typed..... as far as i know ... how can a newbie know all the command ??

how shall i get my modem driver (dialup) up and running even when it had loads of driver problem with XP... ???
i will be doomed then .. no internet... BREAK EVERYTHING !!

then isnt it the windows/Ms changed the way we interact with a pc ??
i think vista is a os which is designed for next gen devices in mind..

and yes its buggy... but was xp stable at the first or after SP1??

can anyone say SP2 xp pro sucks??

i am all one Ms side..
more over i cant even know which linux distro is best ??

yes it free .. but is it a replacement for windows ??

no way it can be ... may be one day .. but that day MS will be way ahead of others..

XP/Vista rocks as far as i concern...

its my opinion...

^I too find connecting to net a problem in the internet.
Linux doesn't properly support Internal(Win) modems.
Linux without net access is a daunting task to achieve.
Hope the Open source community comes with some generic driver for internal modems.

^^Guys I dunno about dial-up connections but broadband works out of box......no drivers nothing just plug in your router.

Finally I have 2mbps speeds.

internal modems are not well supported as it is made for windows.but anyway some chipsets are supported.wireless support also is not up to the mark.but that all blames shud go to the manufacturers to not open up or providing drivers.vista users too face this.so now win users too know what it will be when ur device is not supported.

yeah,,,, it takes like days to make a device up and running with linux...

perhaps due to lack of proper knowledge abt it..:(

broadband will obviously work out of the box. not much different from LAN, ethernet......... and linux is great for networking AFAIK

^first of all Linux is Open Source and depends on community developers.they are doing volunteer service unlike paid service which is expected with apple or M$ products.
device drivers are either wrote by volunteer developers who can when a company give access to their product specs or sometimes for few devices reverse engg is done to write the drivers.also unlike windows,Linux 2.6 kernel onwards esp,the device drivers are part of the kernel itself or made as modules.
So Linux is not an alternate to Windows, but a completely different Operating system with little similarities with windows or DOS.
if you can, read below link for an enligtenement.
*linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
Linux needs the use of terminal bash shell which is easy compared to MS-DOS cmd.com.

if ur searching for a free oss windows, then get on hand with a crawling project called "reactos". :)

@azzu:it may take few weeks for a n00b to UNIX(esp file systems, file managers, window managers,X server) like systems to understand different things.also try to unlearn few windows ways!.with Linux, you are learning more about ur hardware and software!and if ur a programmer or an aspiring one u can have good time with different ides for java,C/C++ or gui programming via GTK2 + or qt4. :)

You know I wish someone could come up with something like a "ndiswrapper" kind of thing for soft modems. It would do for soft modems what it did for wifi. I tried ndiswrapper when I had a laptop (Acer 5002 NWLMI). I had a Broadcom wifi adapter. I have added the details to the wiki on the ndiswrapper site.
