Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system. This white paper summarizes what is new in Windows XP SP3.

I have just made a fresh install and then installed SP3. Commenting on performance will not be right until a few days. Its working quite stable for me.

The reason I said a must install on fresh installs is coz it updates the windows in the SP fashion.

@gsoul2soul
Service packs are cumulative. So you wont need to install SP2.

I think it makes more sense if you have SP1 and SP2 already installed since "Windows XP SP3 now contains 1,073 patches/hotfixes, not including those in previous service packs..."

sp3 covers every single patch of sp1 and sp2...you dont need to install sp1 and sp2 ...just install sp3

I didnt find any difference except that it installs all patches. So in a way your XP becomes a bit more secured if not completely.
