Xenforo Feedback Thread

Hi all,

We're moving to xenforo soon, and the forum will be closed for posting later today for as long as 24 hours in order to complete the process.

We will be moving from *forum.digit.in to *geek.digit.in/community

Since many of us will find xenforo new (including me), I could use your help identifying some good themes/styles for xenforo (free or reasonably-priced).

Same thing for desired addons for xenforo.

This will help TDF and also give you something to do while the forum is down

How do I change the theme? Earlier, Neo TDF Members was nice.

Apparently only the older vbulletin likes are imported, as the newer plugin (dragonbyte post thanks/likes) is not supported for import. I guess we just have to forget about that :-(

But why Xenforo ? I mean Xenforo is good for also having a custom CMS, but otherwise it just feels..odd(IPB feels a little more familiar...theme customization in Xenforo is powerful though). As for theme, something plain would be nice, so you can customize it; something like this.

Performance was the primary reason for the move to xenforo. Also better SEO (so people say).

Mainly the move was because VB was clunky and old and heavy.

I like your theme suggestion. Let's see how many others also do

Meaning you don't need something like VBSEO (that is what I used back in 2013) ? Also, please please don't add any chat, it just doesn't serve any purpose (mostly the box is dead anyway).
Also, you can add something like this.

No, we don't need vbseo, and no, chat isn't coming back. Post those other suggestions here. We need to get feedback from all members

General:
A link between main "geek" portal and the forum, where long form articles from regular contributors are displayed there and the discussion concerning those articles is seamlessly transferred to forum, instead of static comments on wordpress. Also, maybe a reverse link where good opening posts from the forum are transferred to the main portal if the thread opener agrees(a bit of a work on moderators side).

Hey this is nice. And the new theme works fluidly as well. I thought that it might be a little slow while browsing with media content heavy pages, but no, works good.

First thing that came to my mind though, which I would like an option of, is a dark theme.

Just have look at this profile page. We need to have something similar to it.

Personally, I don't like the "geek" word in the URL, it's cringy. The previous URL was fine.

Forum is now under a new section of the site that we will be launching soon, especially meant for geeks. That's why the geek.digit.in (Digit Geek).

We want to target geeky people like you, who want more than just the average tech user / buyer, and wants some indepth knowledge about science, tech and culture.

You're also welcome to write articles in your area of expertise for us to be posted on geek.digit.in

Don't think there's a limit now. Still finding my way around the settings so I could be wrong. There's a limit to how many people can be in a conversation though.

This is some change. Looks good.

However, I have observed that the animated avatars don't animate. Fix pls.

Edit2: Ok, so I see that when I click on My Name > Avatar then it appears to be animating in the resulting dialog box. Otherwise, everywhere else it appears to be static.

Does this have some AntiSpammer/Troller mechanism to keep Spammers and Trollers out of bay ?

Not bad, this looks neat. The post count to be hidden in the future too? Kind of undermines long time users, no?

A simple dark theme as Steam forums will work.

Need a theme like TDF 6.5. I am too used to those colors, similar colors would be nice too.

Black theme with red text is nice. My vote for that.

White text on black background is also strenous.

If you are using a dark background, please don't use any fluorescent color or white.

It will get some time to get use to. But the new forum is working fast and it's a welcome change.

There's no modcp in this. Just thread-based and post-based moderation – all inline. There is only admincp.

@bssunilreddy Yes & for a good reason.Check out my reply in still open report regarding changing username.tagging @Vyom @RCuber @dashing.sujay @krishnandu.sarkar @topgear @sam to check out the same.I believe @ico also has access to it which is good & any rare issue like changing username, he can take care of it.

How about adding more user classes based on number of posts and likes. Also add community staff from companies like Nvidia,amd,intel etc(since digit has close relationships with them) and a new forum section called Ask an expert/Ask a trustee in which community staffs will answer your queries

Found a dirty fix for the dark theme width issue. In the CSS, you can disable margins and set max-width to 100% in the .pageWidth class.

If possible yes. I thought I would get used to the timestamp being at bottom. But I am too used to seeing the timestamp on top, and it makes sense too that it should.

@Raaabo Try [bd] Widget Framework. It's free and have all kind of metric on popular threads.

Also, changing the core URL will need 301 redirects to get proper response from Google. Need informing through WebmasterTools as well.

A report button for new users so that we can help mods identify the fake accounts.
Copying the username, finding a mod who is online and messaging is a long process.
TDF would be more nice with a stylish and modern theme/skin...this one looks kinda 2010-2012 oldish

Old Youtube tags not seem to be working, but the last 1 is correct. Check this link: Which upcoming movie are you excited to watch....?

Too many addons adds database queries and adds overhead which means slower performance, which would defeat the purpose of moving to xenforo. Let's not get addon crazy just because they're available.

Also, more addons means more things that can break when updating (even security updates), which adds a huge headache for me. So please, only addons that we all want, and preferably need.

@bssunilreddy I saw those options to import dbseo likes. Is it that important to people? The only one of those I haven't tried is the SQL query, which could also break things...

We always used [ youtube ] <code> [ /youtube ] as the tags, right?

Why would you report a user? Just report a post, and that's there below every post...

Nope when in vbulletin we used [video] YouTube url[/video]

Can the signature be bottom aligned? The post section needs to take up the most space. Currently signature is taking up that space. And i always end up looking at the signature first.

No, last thing in every post has to be the report and like buttons etc. That's a control for the whole post, not for the signature, you're nitpicking where I see no problem whatsoever.

You should have been using [ youtube ]somestring[ / youtube ] tags. Set xenforo to ignore video tags. Should work now.

For xenforo you only need to paste the URL and it auto parses to embed the video.

Is this the same for everyone or is this issue unique to me?

However, when I click on the avatar link under the top right menu then the avatar preview appears animated.

@Raaabo I am unable to start conversations with other members, @ico is facing the same issue.We have received conversations from other members & as per their screen shots they are seeing the "start a conversation" option in either under information tab on our profile page or on the Conversations main screen itself.However I am unable to see this option in either of these 2 places.

1. Is this possible to keep "stay logged in" checked by default like it was before?
2. Multiquote option
3. There was this option to click replies and see some stats like how many posts are posted by someone (I mean in a particular thread). When I couldn't get results from search for some reason, I used this option to find a post. I don't see this option in Xenforo, is this possible in Xenforo?

2.click on "reply"(beside the "like" option) below a post,then again do the same thing for other post/posts on the same page.

Not on different pages,in that case you open the other page in different tab,do the same procedure there & then copy paste the resulting post code into your original reply post on first/other tab.

I could multiquote posts from different page without copy/pasting. But it's limited to two posts, if I multiquote third one from different page (3 posts from 3 different page, then the second quoted message would be gone). If I stayed in 2nd page, I can keep multiquote posts.

Seems like multiquoting posts from different pages works only when quoting the last post. When I do that I can quote another post from another page.

Default theme: Too bright. ANd that is why we've TDF dark
In the dark theme the URLs are coming as red in normal font. So, normal red over black background makes it illegible.

Is it possible to make the Hyperlinks a bit bright?

Instead of red, probably blue would be better, IMO.
Edit: tried changing color in browser, blue color doesn't look good, though you can try lightskyblue color.

The present dark theme is not as good as some other dark themes given in links posted earlier in this thread.

Need that TDF neo theme back.

It is solved,now I can see "start a conversation" option on other members' profile as well as in my account settings.

Using digit desktop site, on normal reply, I can't identify links easily on white background. Please can you do something? changing link color (dark color or something suitable) or making link "bold"?

Also please add "Image resizing option" so that big resolution images can be cut down as per uploaders choice.

Quoting this again for visibility. Can this be fixed?

I think this is because Xenforo creates a different static image as a thumbnail and uses it for posts instead of the actual gif. This is probably because Xenforo also uses the same thumbnail for marking forums where a user has posted to previously.

Good to see URLs re-enabled in signatures.

Yeah it'll get difficult. Anyways, trading in general on Steam is dead because of the huge market restrictions of Dota 2 in particular(although CSGO is quite open).

I have looked into the issue. Did some testing. And found out that we can not enter more than around 9584 (approx) characters in one post.

I think it's Xenforo default limitation. I will work around fixing that by increasing the character count. Meanwhile you can post new movies in new post. We can merge it in 1st post when this is fixed. Thanks for informing about this issue.

A SSL certificate basically contains a encryption key using which all HTTP packets are encrypted. It's basically the private key part of Public-key_cryptography.

It's also used so that the end user can know that the site they are visiting is authenticated by some authority.

Edit: Basically, a fundamental for enabling HTTPS.

In reference to SSL Certificates....

It's actually the "Public key", part of the encryption mechanism, which is shared using digital certificate (sent by server) and not Private key (these are never ever shared and are only used for decryption of initial messages).

Public key is used by client/users to encrypt the messages in initial SSL/TLS Handshake. Any communications afterwards the handshake is complete, happens via Symmetrical keys derived using Master Secret keys. Public keys aren't used throughout the communication for encryption.

Adding to it, TLS can be used for things beyond HTTP too, such as FTPS, SMTPS etc since it's Protocol independent. Sometimes it can also be deployed in agnostic manner to higher layer protocols, for e.g. Layer 3 SSL/Remote Access VPN.

Quoting an already quoted post (the way you want) is available in dpreview. I haven't seen that kind in TDF. If it's available, then I am not aware of that.

I am more interested in the "list of all threads started by a member". I want to view all the threads I have started at one place.
On VBulletin I had maintained a group where I had saved all the threads which I started. I can't find that group now and neither I can view all threads which I have started.

I tried searching the posts/thread I posted/started. None of them are dated older than 10th Oct 2011. So I am kinda sure that I joined on 10th of Oct 2011, not 2010. My guess is that this date mismatch is after Xenforo upgrade.

There is some addon for xenforo which adds this. A different editor, maybe. Or, you can simply use online service which allows you to take out table as HTML.

Tables aren't available. Some xenforo plugin needs to be added to the forum for that functionality.

Please fix the table BBCode issue. It is really annoying in writing list order.

@Raaabo @ico could someone fix the clock in forum's server (it is lagging)? I believe that is causing 2FA related problems. I confirmed this by using a code which had just expired on the Authenticator app.

I used authy code which was shown 1-2 minutes ago and I successfully logged into forum.

Hackers can use this flaw.

I think it's because they are SVG but their size limit is not defined in whatever plugin is being used.

Someone atleast remove the logo of Xenforo.. replace with digit.in

Only proper admins can do that. Until then I guess we will have to use a Greasemonkey script to do that.

I am admin, but I don't have too many privileges. I cannot change the forum structure or look and feel. I can only manage users. Proper admins like @Raaabo or @Anorion can make bigger changes.

Lol, even I did not notice .. was using dark theme along with Dark Reader ( Chrome extension ). Now with default style theme and dark Reader on I can see post counts - not a fix but a workaround I guess.

Dunno, I don't think the forum is digit's priority for a while now. Advertising for it in their mag is pretty minimal and I don't even thing a new digit subscriber even realize, for a few months that this forum is still active, I myself didn't. Digit is NOT a magazine, neither is it a website. It's a brand that wants to help people in India learn about tech, excel at it, and buy smartly.

We're not the type to try and force-fit solutions on people. Almost ALL of the people on this forum are in WhatsApp groups chatting away in real-time and not bothering to come to the forums. So let's get this straight... The forum was my baby. It was almost single-handedly run by me, all in extra time (no one in Digit has "free" time, we work 12 hour days minimum). I sacrificed spending time with my wife and family to stay in office well past midnight to keep the forum updated and running, troubleshooting server errors and updating and adding on features, or migrating to new software as and when demanded.

It's the forum members who abandoned the forum to go elsewhere, leaving only very few people left here. The forum never made us any money. If all we do is "follow the money", then the forum wouldn't even exist. Not for a single month – even in the heyday of the forum with 10k hits about an earthquake – did the forum make enough from adsense (or whatever) to even cover the server costs.

What we have done is follow the people. This is true.

Because to be "Your technology navigator" we need to be where you are...

I'm eternally grateful to the mods and few old members on this forum for managing it and keeping their passion for it alive by posting, even if it is for dwindling numbers of people. As far as I'm concerned, they're the real heroes of the forum. And the only reason this forum has not been shut down is because of them, and for them.

That said, I'm all ears to hear suggestions about how we might get the numbers in here...

What people seem to need more-and-more these days is buying advice. Should the forum be completely rethought to offer that to the masses? A few experts teaching the masses how to buy smarter?

Or are there other suggestions for how this space can be put to good use to actually help the millions of Indians who need help with so many different aspects of tech? I can tell you that keeping it the way it already is... is not going to do any of that... And perhaps Xenforo is too limiting itself to be able to give us anything but what it already is... which is not much...

Ultimately for long term stability one needs money. As it is running a forum of this magnitude will need manpower and server costs. Nobody should be expected to do it for free.

I was under the impression that a particular company owns and operates Digit managazine, the website and forum as part of its presence. I did not know that the forum part was a voluntary endeavor. Thank you @Raaabo

I understand the user migration part. Personally I have been reading Digit magazine for many years now and went from a casual buyer at corner stand to being a subscriber. Recently majority of the content in the magazine is of no interest to me and the news part is widely covered by online media. I still continue to subscribe because I want to support what Digit is doing.

May be an alternative way of funding and keeping alive the forum could be found? Digit seems to already be doing something such as tie up with AMD?

I would even suggest that an extension into automobiles would also be welcomed as India does not have a freely accessible automobile forum now. Team-bhp is a walled garden.

Automobile, Cyber-sec, Cyber-Law, scams, and things of this sort have few forums out there, especially Indian ones. These should be focused to increase the forum's life.

@Raaabo while what you say is right. I also think more can be done. The forum actually has a PR issue in my opinion. For example the link to the forum is not easily accessible from the main digit home page which might prevent new users from even knowing it exists.

Another thing to promote the forum is to find the right niche. For example we have members who are experts in the field of PC build, peripherals, laptops and mobile phones. So, Digit can be a good community for people looking for buying advice. But it really needs publicity every now and then, especially on social media. The featured threads in the magazine helps but some users were complaining that the shortened URLs get expired after sometime.

Also the forum needs more digit branding like change the xenforo logo with the digit logo. I think the default xenforo logo seems very alienating for new members.

But how much effort does it take to change xenforo to digit logo?

I simply meant they don't have resource to change this. If they had a dedicated IT person working with them for this forum then they would have changed it by now. This is my guess.

But using scripts is not a best option until the logo is changed because Digits own identity lies with its Logo and scripts are like cheat codes for games and I don't recommend them.

I started buying PC components in 2000 when I saw Digit & Skoar magazines and fell in love with them.

Even Chip magazine used to be good in those days.

My 1st games was a demo version from Digit magazines CDs which I used to wait patiently every month and it was " Submarine Titans"
And I played it like he'll in those days.

It's nothing to do with the logo or anything and you're free to change the logo (it's one of the settings when you log in).

1. This is not friendly for a beginner, signing up is confusing (gmail signup already pls!). Now if you piss off a new member just on the signup screen, then, well, it would be hard to get new members won't it?
2. The UI is not there.
a)The whole UI looks dated to me, the dark mode is hard to notice and change into and it even makes many things invisible. The white theme, does NOT look pleasing.
b)In addition to that, the page looks cluttered like an RTS game, with 10s of buttons on a single page, and they won't do anything to just "blend in" in the UI, instead of popping out.
c) Why do the new button and the create button look so insignificant? I still sometimes can't find the new and create buttons, not they are not big and not colourful, but they are not in proper place.
d) There is duplication of several buttons, the top menu bar being the culprit.
3. If you can get a separate domain for this forum, please do. The geek.digit.in site has a specific purpose and UI now, and this forum doesn't look like a part of it at all. Don't trust me? Just click the "Home" button now.

Now the third aspect of the suggestion is ur revenue from this forum. Now the first thing is to take note is that its a cycle, if you make this forum good, more people would come here, which would make you improve this forum more, which would get more people and the cycle goes on. Just make sure that this forum IS a good idea, not in 2003, but today. If you able to get sponsors on board who want to publish their ads on this forum, accept their deals. One thing I noted that, there is a lack of advertisments in this forum, like I didn't see much difference when I turned my adblocker off here. Maybe this points to a technical problem, but I would suggest you to increase the volume of (quality) ads on this forum.

In summary a)Harp about this forum b) make the UX better c) Increase the quantity of quality ads.

I think it's valid to maintain this as an Indian forum since anyone from outside India might not be privy to Indian market situation, availability of products, etc. Not gonna lie, this is an India first forum. While foreigners are allowed to make accounts here, in my experience most of them are spammers and they are usually promptly banned when encountered.

These points are generally the same for most forums. Perhaps there might be more themes that might add visibility. But then again these points are by and large the issue with Xenforo and not with this forum in particular. However, I still think that a user can get accustomed to a lot of these features.

This will break some plugins, that is why the domain cannot be changed at this time. That being said I used to like the old thinkdigit.com/forum URL.

Well, these were my thoughts when I was Digit describing this forum as India's forum, but it seems digit itself is moving away from that identity of the forum, describing it as "One of the most active online tech forum not only in India but world-wide".

Yeah, I was saying that they should, just to avoid making this project a money sink. I can't suggest them ways to make more money, but take that LLT forum for example, he is using that from to advertise his videos, alongwith putting other ads.

Well, the difference between telegram and whatsapp group is that, telegram group is the official one, with dgit editors as its admins ( to listen to the feedbacks). The group is, arguably, active.Its primary purpose being, people to interact with digit team, to give them feedback about the mag. Its unofficially also a place to hang out with forum members and dgit subscribers.

We currently don't have many members(113 to be exact) so currently, Desmonddavid(from the forum) with occasional help from the digit staff maintain it.

It seems non-login users no longer see our Forum Signatures. Might be a theme issue with the default light theme.

I think they were just giving the telegram group an initial boost. Its not digit who wants digit to have a smartphone presence, its the consumers I think, since people have been begging them to create a whatsapp group for years now.

To further add on advertisement of forum:
Below editors column, in a small area with heading "Discussions, links to interesting threads are given, but the posts are not printed, ". Below that are the links where you join the discussions -:
"Web: geek.digit.in | forum:geek.digit.in/community | Facebook: facebook.in/digitgeek".

The TG group is usually marketed as an easy way to give feedback on the mag, and I don't think interacting with the editors is so easy in TDF. So, thus the advertising of the telegram group is easily visible besides the feedback column, on the arguably the first page of the mag.

I think you should use a PNG with transparent background. That way you can use the same logo for light as well as dark themes.

Currently I am using a greasemonkey script to add the Digit logo from the main site to the forum. It looks like this :

I wouldn't say broken, but, while this theme looks better than shades of grey, it makes certain elements hard to see, for example checkboxes and highlighted text. Maybe its just me though, do you also see the same problem?

Used photopea.com to modify the jpeg logo which I had in my archives and converted to png. Refer attached logos.

I also tried to attach PSD, so if anyone wants to use them to modify can do that, but forum don't allow that extension.

DigitLogo_1.png has some white areas near the borders of the characters when viewed with dark background.

Yup. You can ignore the first one. I had fixed that in other iterations. I also added a white border around it, so that it looks good in both light and dark background.

About a month ago, i clicked on notifications to see all the updates and closed the browser tab, so notifications on which I have already clicked will not appear when I return to forum. Now I have notifications from Wednesday, even though I have visited that particular thread several times.

I thought while making some changes, one of the settings got changed unknowingly and everyone is facing same issue now. Currently I am using Firefox on Windows. I should check in Chrome once. Thanks.

I switched to Chrome browser but still seeing the old notifications, even after click on them.

Not that its a major inconvenience, but if any Admin is touching some settings of forum, might as well look into these also. Just FYKI.

Can we get an option to hide certain sections/sub-sections?

There are quite a few sections on the forum and I often find it confusing. In fact, the increase in number of sections was one of the reasons I became inactive on the forum 5-6 years ago.

However, now I'm trying to visit the forum more frequently to avoid being bombarded with inane posts on other social media. And I was wondering if there's an option to hide sections I'm not interested in. For instance, I have no interest in gaming and would like to hide that section completely.

It can also be implemented to hide sections which have no new posts since my last visit.

If it isn't already present, can this be built?

That is a general buying advice thread. It just coincidentally has mobile related threads stickied.

That sub-forum is in "Mobile Monsters" section which reads "All threads related to cell phones, PDAs, smartphones, and other assorted mobile gizmos... Strictly for the geeky!".

New members have posted threads there by mistake like this one:

I told him several times that in order to re-register or gather interest for the forum we need to make it more attractive by creating Market sections more profitable for the users. But I hail Raabos interest in keeping this forum alive this long.

For some reason twitch clips (URL with clips dot twitch dot TV) can't be embedded. Only actual twitch streams. I am guessing this is a more whole XF limitation rather than TDF. Just mentioning it.

Easier said than done.

Tech stuff is not as straightforward as people think it is. Things don't always work the way they are supposed to. A minor connectivity issue can cause database connection to go down for hours. Worse still, many times it takes hours just to figure out what's wrong when apparently nothing had changed but things just stopped working.

You would be surprised to know how little many bank employees know about their own bank internet banking/credit card/debit card features. Operating a tech site does not mean everyone or even some of the staff are experts in database management.

I agree but their rival forums like te doing pretty well compared to digit They implemented xenforo pretty early too and their site is very stable no downtime at all

Managing a Forum is not easy. You need a dedicated team who can handle all downtime issues and the cost involved (server/maintenance etc). Many small forums go down due to this.

This suggestion is more for digit forum and news website.

You must have known about team-BHP forums. I recently noticed, they were taking questions and top replies from questions asked in their forums and making news/article pages with them.

This can be implemented by digit also with this forum too. This will help both digit and forum as more people looking for solution to some common/unique problems will get to know about digit forum and also will increase reach of digit news pages.

I think this was done in digit magazine earlier and probably still being done. I've had answers I've written on the forum printed in the magazine many years back.

Can pinned threads have a different highlight in the threads list. The small pins are barely noticeable.

Techenclave like segregation is also good. They use Xenforo as well.

IIRC Digit already had that segregation. I think things got changed after the major overhaul few years back.

Saw the message announcing linking to external sites be not allowed anymore(hyperlinks changes to normal texts like: www.google.com). Any info if it's a digit decision or xenforo limitation? Done for combating spam? Would personally love for them to come back.

Maybe it can be enabled for posts made by certain users, like anyone meeting a criteria for account age + number of posts made, like 3 months + 50 posts, maybe. Don't know if such a logic implementation is even possible.

Tapatalk integration broke as well. Some threads won't open at all.

It is possible but will likely require some paid xenforo addon.

Feedback: I really love posting on Digit Forum, but the recent security measures have taken all the fun away. We can’t add proper links anymore, and pictures show up as attachments. Someone posted multiple pictures in the Show Off thread, and I had to click on each attachment to view them.

Agreed. But it seems like the Digit team either does not know how to revert back the changes that @Raaabo had introduced or they don't care enough.

I am just the janny here, so I can't make those changes myself. I guess we'll just to make do with what we have until someone on the Digit team does something.

I have contacted them directly about this, but haven't heard back anything so far.

Greetings folks! The IT folks are trying to secure the forum in line with the IT policies of the new organisation. There have been a few glitches on the way but the team is trying to figure things out. They're new to XenForo and there's a bit of a learning curve involved.
