Both Z/ZL do NOT have overheating issue. In FACT they heat up less than Xperia S/SL/Galaxy S3/ One X etc.

Just pick the one you like more, the difference is only in build and size. Screen is also same on both.

My cousin used Xperia Z for a few days (demo unit in his showroom). He said Xperia Z had overheating issues... He is a geek, a tech lover, not your average shopkeeper. So, I trust his word.

Fair enough. But what I meant was while the Z does heat up, it heats up much less than 2012 flagships. And also since it's water resistant you can always dip it in cold water to cool it down. The HTC One and S4 heat up as much or more than the Z.

All smartphones heat up under heavy usage, with no exceptions. It's only the degree that matters

Why not buy a HTC One instead which costs only a little more than the Xperia Z?

A few reasons I can think of -

1. Smaller screen

2. 3G/4G weak reception

3. Build Quality inconsistencies and gaps, not durable

4. Overheating

5. Not close to stock Android

6. Poor Camera in Daylight, low resolution

7. No microSD card slot, no 64GB option in India

8. Locked bootloader, unfriendly attitude towards developers.

9. Less available RAM, 1.5GB vs 1.8GB on Z

If we look at it the other way ( One over Z) then we have

1. Slightly faster chip

2. Better low light capability

3. Optical Image Stabilization

4. Much better Speakers

5. Easier to hold due to smaller size (though ZL is as compact with a 5 inch screen)

6. Better screen on time on battery

Build quality is inconsistent in HTC One?
You better be kidding.

Dipping phone in water just because it's water resistant looks funny & lame. Always going near a tap and dipping it in water because you can

The changes made to the Android skin looks rather good. I donot think a stock Android user would complain.

8. Locked bootloader, unfriendly attitude towards developers.

9. Less available RAM, 1.5GB vs 1.8GB on Z hardly makes a difference unless you like to run way too many applications simultaneously

Replies in bold.

If you're getting an Xperia then:

For Z

1. Good for use during adventure sports
2. very good looking

Against Z

1. can only take upto 32GB expansion when ZL can take 2x that
2. horrible camera

For ZL

1. better expansion capacity
2. cheaper

Against ZL

1. Not as good looking as Z
2. not as durable as Z but good enough for city life

IMHO, if the 64GB HTC becomes available in India, it might be a better investment than the sony.

Build quality issues have always been an integral "feature" of HTC phones of late. All their past flagships have had build quality issues. And I personally do not believe they will fix it as since 2 years their phones have had build quality issues and yet they did nothing to fix it.

well in this case OP can wait to see which serial number models are not affected and then go for a htc-one or get a xperia z

but their profits are not connected with build quality issues

all minute details aside, htc one and xperia z are both really good phones. it depends on the OP if he seems to spend 6k extra on the htc one fit. If it were me i would choose xperia z anyday, i tend to leave my phone lying around it catches dust and throw it on the bed and all, so id love the extra ruggedness.

Go and read the review of One by Brian @ Anandtech
I have not seen One yet,but the display of Z/ZL(retail units not demo)is clearly inferior to Butterfly and I am sure anyone who has seen them side by side(not YouTube videos or reviews)will agree to this.

Another extremely annoying thing in Z is the delay in the launch of the camera app, when someone is coughing up 35k,these little things can not be ignored.
Moreover sq of Z through the hp out is not at all impressive(..and I do not expect htc to be any better given their past history and association with Beats)

I've explained to you a 100 times that retail Z/ZL have excellent screens but you still prefer to play deaf.

Here are two posts from a member at a forum you are a member at:

Post No.1 - Seeing a DEMO Z unit

3 - Sadly, what should have been the best feature of the phone, is the worst. The screen is really bad. Blacks are kinda Grey, and the brightness of the screen is kinda low. But the ppi is very impressive.

Post No.2 - After buying Z

I also got the phone today. Let's just say it's insanely incredible!

Apart from this I already posted display quality measurements in the Xperia 2013 thread that proves retail Z/ZL have 1500:1 + contrast ratio and excellent performance wrt greyscale and color accuracy.

Alternatively go through XDA Indian Z owners thread and read what Iphone 5 and Note 2 owners have to say about Z screen.

*forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106241

You will see many complain about the screen being bad seeing demo units, but once they bought the phone they had nothing but praise for the screen.

Not ONE guy complained about a retail Z screen in that thread over 100 pages.

Anyway @OP

IMPORTANT -

I would honestly suggest you get the Z over ZL. But in any case if the following things worry you then you should buy HTC One or Galaxy S4.

1. You do NOT prefer natural colors but fake over saturated colors and oversharpened images.

2. Speaker loudness is important to you

3. You do not like the idea of opening and closing water resistant flaps everytime

4. You want the best benchmark score.

5. You want excellent low light camera performance only and do not care about daylight camera performance

If any of the above is the case PLEASE do not buy Z/ZL :)

I think I wrote specifically about retail units, not demos.
Have you seen butterfly/One and Z/ZL side by side yourself? The panel used by htc is clearly better than Z/ZL(RETAIL UNITS NOT DEMO!)
Z/ZL screen is not bad per se but when compared to butterfly/One,it is obvious htc used a better panel(which is anything but over saturated!)
randomuser111
Apr 10, 2013 at 1:18 PM

Yes I've seen both and they look same head on and for your kind info,90% Z/ZL use the same panel as HTC Butterfly and have same contrast ratio as well. You can check the panel ID on both since you appear to have access to both Z and Butterfly. And compared to Z the Butterfly is definitely over saturated. Same with the One.

If you want you can increase saturation with the Z's calibration app. Also white balance needs to be adjusted for the UI to look as good and black taskbar and buttons instead of Grey.

And where did you see a retail Z and Butterfly side by side ?

Right in my office mate! And I hope Sony is not selling demo units to the customers because they(butterfly and ZL) DO NOT look same head on!
If they are using the same panel,Sony is doing something horribly wrong!

Then it must be a JDC panel. Early Z batches used Sharp and JDC panels. Those Zs with JDC panels have inferior quality compared to Sharp panels.

I assume your mate bought it in first week of launch in India ?

The new batches (Manufactured March onwards) use Sharp panels only.

BTW if your mate is okay with rooting he can install the calibration app and improve the screen a bit. OR else wait for 4.2.2 update. It will be included

She bought the ZL in last week of March, not rooted yet, will check this weekend. However in all probability it isn't JDC.
Brian Klug at anandtech wrote htc One may have JDC panels(the review sample he received) and according to him it is the BEST panel he has seen till date, and I trust his opinion.
So JDC does not necessarily mean bad quality panel.

So JDC does not necessarily mean bad quality panel.

HTC One has a JDI panel = manufactured by Sony.

Z/ZL have JDC panel = Toshiba panel.

So they are not the same.

And I never said JDC panels = bad. Just that the JDC panels used in the early Z batches are lower quality. Newer JDC panels are also good.

Z supports upto 64 GB microSDXC cards. So does the ZL

But that means you have to format it to FAT32, which is an archaic file system- which means storing HD movies will be a PITA (you will have to split the file). ZL OTOH supports SDXC in exFAT.

Both Z and ZL support 64GB cards in FAT32 format ONLY. With a simple mod both can support 64GB with exFAT file system but not by default.

I took a demo for xperia z few days back.. I liked it overall but just that the sound thru hp was not loud enough.. It was very quiety type.. compared to my iphone4...and i was not even using the sony hp.. I was using my own logitech ue350vi hp. I wonder if there was any problem or xperia z is only that loud.. I faced the same problem with my friends xperia s.. The volume is so low that i felt like i was listening at 50%volume. Is there anything that can be done abt it.. Japan Display Inc. is owned by Sony!?

Japan display Inc is the merger of Sony Mobile Displays, Toshiba Mobile Displays and Hitachi Mobile Displays. The merger was completed only 2 days back and now on all JDI panels will be marked as "JDI". But so far though they were merged on paper, physically they still functioned independently.

JDC was the code for Toshiba Panels (Japan Display Central)
JDI was the code for Sony panels ( JDI West)

In fact right from sensation, HTC has been using Sony panels on select batches ( SLCD , SLCD2, SLCD3) Some Butterfly units also use Sony panel.

Apr 11, 2013 at 12:56 PM
That info is present in Wiki, however Sony's contribution is only 10%...and even the Sharp panel used in Z/ZL is clearly inferior to JDI panel of Butterfly.
Moreover in Q2 of 2010,htc started using SLCD for Desire(shortage of AMOLED pAnels) and those are sourced from company jointly owned by Samsung and Sony(as usual Samsung was the much bigger contributor)

Did you even check what panel is in your mate's ZL ? Check first and then make that statement.

And did you even read the article on JDI ? I don't think as if you had read it, you wouldn't make such a silly statement.

70% shares are of the Japanese Government, that's just money and not a display division. Is that so tough to understand ? Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba own 10% each but actual divisions belong to them. The entire business was divided into threee - JDI W, JDC, JDI E.

@red dragon: good that u can read English, but I actually did take a demo of butterfly at one of the stores and the moment I saw its yellowish screen(personal opinion) and its longish body coupled with a feminine name(personal opinion again) and over the sky pricing, I decided not to go for that. Personally I don't find a point in spending 45k for an htc when I can get iphone5 for 43k(as I already own iphone 4).So I find xperia z/zl a better value for money option.
@empirial: well as I am already using iphone 4 which has a superb scrren with a 326ppi count(I don't remember the exact figure), so I don't find anything special with optimus G's 318ppi screen. So yes I would like to have a fon with 1080p screen with a 44oppi count if I can when its easily available around the same price.
@cooldude94: Well i never said anywhere that I xperia screen is better than htc one/butterfly. If you are going that way then lets also bring iphone5 into the picture coz everyone know that its got a superb camera performance coupled with a classic OS that can easliy beat all the htcs easliy.

The point I am trying to make is that I don't find any point in spending 43k-45k for a phone that marginally better than other phones in the market for 34k-37k. If the same htc phones were made available for around the same pricing as of sony and LG then i would have surely went with the htc one. What htc does provide in the same price range is outdated already(OneX+ with a gig ram and 312ppi screen priced at 36k).Over that I have not seen very good service response from HTC, one of the reasons for htc's decline in the market.Try to find a htc shop or even a shop keeping all htc phones and you will know then, maybe even LG has more stores than htc.At least thats what I have found in east delhi/noida/ghaziabad side where I live.

So plz I would like to know which one you guys consider from z/zl.
Thanx

I'd suggest you to buy nothing. You're completely right about spending 40-43K on a phone being meaningless. If I had to buy one of those 43K phones, I'd let a couple of months pass for prices to go down.

Personally speaking HTC One is a beauty but...... I find SenseUI repulsive. I'd have purchased Xperia Z over it. Screen criticism doesn't apply to my usage as I always keep brightness to the minimum level (except outdoors) to save battery life. All screens tend to look same at low brightness. The only thing which could matter about screen is sunlight legibility. GSMArena criticised Xperia Z's screen's viewing angles, but everyone keeps the mobile phone right in front to use it. No one keeps their phone flat on a table to watch a video. "Angle" never comes into play for a mobile for all practical purposes. It's not a TV or a computer monitor.

Thought I must say, battery life of Xperia Z sucks and the Samsung soapbar overall is the best phone among the three. Sad but true.

PS: You won't go "wrong" with any of the flagship phones from HTC, Sony and Samsung. All three of them are good. Just prioritise on what you want. tbh, if I had to buy an Android phone, it will only be a Nexus.

Try to find a htc shop or even a shop keeping all htc phones and you will know then, maybe even LG has more stores than htc.At least thats what I have found in east delhi/noida/ghaziabad side where I live.
There are ample no. of shops in that area, in Laxmi Nagar(East Delhi) there are uncountable shops which keeps HTC phones. And there are many shops in Atta market in Noida which have a good stock of HTC phones. If you are living in that area then I think you must be aware about the fact.

Okay here are the main differences. You decide yourself

Please don't make "OMG lol rofl" posts in future. They add nothing to the discussion. :)

Redditizing TDF eh? j/k

@OP: If you still think both phones are on par, then try to jot down your requirements (i.e. don't compare feature set, see which of the two phones allow you to do everything you would almost certainly do ). If both phones meet the requirements, then there are two ways to choose: 1. The cheaper option 2. the better looking option

No question that ZL wins 1 (by a relatively small margin) but 2 is more about personal preference.

I personally like the Z more than ZL but I think the two phones are too big and too thin. Maybe I just like the heft and thickness provided by my N8, lol.

So, [provided both phones meet your requirements] if you want to save $$ take ZL or if that is not of any concern then take whichever one looks better to you :)

I hope this helps!

Read the whitepaper of Z and ZL on Sony Mobile website, ZL has 720p front cam and 2370mAh battery. Z has 1080p front camera and 2400mAh battery

@randomuser: well I checked the white paper also, the front cam is mentioned as 1080p for both. Regarding the battery, they have 2400mAh(TYPICAL) and 2330mAh(MIN) for z and 2370mAh(TYPICAL) and 2300mAh(MIN). I don't understand what this typical and minimum means here. Actually that is very strange as each and every review and comparisons that I have checked online mentions what I told u earlier. But this is something different and if the battery on z is really 2400mAh then why is Sony telling everyone it is 2330mAh? btw which xperia do u own which one will u choose among z and zl?and why?

I would choose the Z based on design alone :)

Typical means the standard capacity whereas minimum is the minimum guaranteed capacity. It is Sony policy to market minimum capacity instead of standard capacity. But in reality the battery is 2400mAh capacity most of the times.

Guys...Planning to buy a new phone...stuck between xperia z or xperia zl....liked xperia z for the water resistance.....xperia zl coz of IR blaster and better screen(reportedly in many reviews)...only thing I dnt like abt xperia z is the heating issues....and since I use my fon a lot I am not sure how much problems will I have coz of that....is xperia zl better than xperia z or they basically the same apart from the water resistance? Plz help!!!!

The highlight of xperia z phone is it is a "bath-friendly" phone. Sony Xpaeria Z is water resistant and can survive for 30 minutes in one meter of water. Definitely good news for those who bundle their phones in plastic at the mere sight of water!

I did that so he came down to 32k other wise it was for 33k. :-? He will not come down more.

Actually he was giving me OP G for 31k & today suddenly he said it's in white color only & for 32k. So I decided to go for ZL [Black Color].

Why you going for ZL ? You can't do with poor viewing angles, so I won't suggest ZL. Get Optimus G only

hmm I doubt he will give for 31k. Also z for 35.5k
Z is too big ZL is compact. I cant extend budget as I already done from 31k to 32k now.

Z was sellink for 32.4 k 2 days back @ superdeals.homeshop18.com
Dont you ever use your phone while eating for taking a call? Like most people the sane answer will be yes and for that reason only I would choose z. And Xperia Z is a flagship model not zl so support at xda would be better. And that was the sole reason I chose my Xperia s over ion and bcos of that I can use leaked jb with no bugs ( thanks to doomloard)
a whole month before official release :)

recently went to croma to check out these new flagships from nokia/samsung/sony. Both s4 and xperia-z were placed side-by-side and the difference in the color reproduction was surprising .

On further checking on the net, it was laughable to say the least the kind of excuses that were presented. Screen made by sharp is good, screen made by jdc is bad......initial units were from jdc , post march they are from sharp so they are good...

These are pretty silly excuses and are not un-common from big companies. What if i had purchased in the 1st week at 35k to only find out that the hd screen is dull and color re-prodcution isn't as good as n-920 or s4 or even sony's own xperia-p and xperia-s ?

Having said that, imho s3 and one-x which are now below the 30k mark and again imho are still relevant for a average joe who plays some decent games, check twitter/fb feeds and does call+sms. Even nokia's l-920 or l-820 are pretty decent options.

Gizmodo's review of zl isn't too great either : Sony Xperia ZL Review: Behind the Curve Everywhere It Counts

Obviously the message from sony is the handset is excellent provided you can work with a hd screen with little dull color reproduction.

but this time around it's official in India & with warranty. So it's worth the price. It beats all droids in this price range.

Comes out to be 385 when you're checking out due to taxes and shipping. 21k approx. Pricing is perfect wrt the competitors. And Google earns though play store content in the US for while people hardly pay in India. Hence.
